My new computer keeps crashing and I don't know why

Hi,

I just recently bought a xps 8100 from dell and recieved it less then a week ago. However, my computer has gotten the blue screen of death twice so far. The first time was when I was paying a game. The second time was when I was just checking my email and listening to my winamp. I'm confused as to why I am getting this and what can I do to fix this?

I would pick up the phone and call DELL and get it fixed or ship it back. But that's how I work.
What is the warranty on it?
I have not looked at you dmp file yet. Not qualified to do so.
But if I just bought a computer and got BSOD it would be underneath my arm heading back to the store or I would be on the phone ASAP!

Why don't you call DELL on their dime. They have a great Customer Service and can even hookup to your computer and check things.
My brother has an XPS 8100 i7 860 and hes just called about an email problem.
You do know that your model has had some issues with CPU getting too hot because of fans not working properly also they make lots of noise (bad fans)

The bugcheck points to mcagent.exe as a probable cause. mcagent.exe is a process belonging to McAfee Internet Security suite. This process ensures the computer's virus definitions are up to date by communicating with the McAfee VirusScan server on the network. Try uninstalling McAfee and see if the BOSD's contiune. Download and install MSE. If McAfee turns out not to be the cause, you can always reinstall it.

As IggyAZ pointed out, heat can definitely cause a BSOD. Try uninstalling McAfee. If that does not work, I would return the computer to Dell and let their techs check it out.

Thanks for the responses. There does seem to be a problem with my Mcafee as well. My real time scanner keeps disabling now...

My computer's fan is not loud so I don't think the problem is over heating.

Have you tried uninstalling McAfee yet?

These latest dumps both point to hardware problems.

Rather than suggest to you that you run a memory test, since this is a new computer, I recommend that you take/send it back to the place of purchase and have Dell's techs take a look at it. If memory, for example, is the problem, it should be covered by warranty. Take advantage of the free technical support to get your machine running properly and smoothly.

Thanks for the help guys. I did indeed call dell today and they told me that my motherboard or my ram may be corrupted. I will be getting replacement parts soon. I'll give you guys an update once my replacement parts are installed.

Replacement parts?
I would demand a new computer that is checked out by their techs and then sent on to you in good working condition. But that's my opinion.
Stay after them as it's your hard earned money that's on the line.

So the Dell technician came to my house today and replaced my motherboard and memory with brand new replacement parts. Upon finishing the job, we tested the computer to see if everything was okay. My computer now cannot even boot up anymore. The technician got on the phone with dell and told them that the replacement motherboard might be defective as well. The person on the phone then talked to the HR department and now I was a new system coming in the mail. I spoke with the dell associate on the phone and he apologized for the inconvience and said something about getting some free upgrades (unfortunately his accent was very strong and I did not understand what he said after that.) So that's the story now. I'm getting a new system now. Hopefully this one will work properly. Thanks for the help guys.

Most likely it was a hardware problem but unless you replace each piece with another it's hard to say exactly which piece of hardware was the culprit. Because he changed out the mobo and memory which had no effect I would be inclined to believe the power supply was the original cause of the problem.
