My new PC

Hello , I got a new (to me) PC today its a built one, the guy was selling because he is to be made redundant, anyway I had a Windows XP laptop before but this PC is a big box, I know its Windows 7 and the guy told me a lot about it (that I did not fully understand) but its working well I think. The only thing I recognise is CCleaner and that says (MS Windows 7 32bit Intel Core2Duo CPU E8400 @3.00GHz, 4.0GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD4800 Series) ? He said something about driver updates so what do I update ?, appreciate any advice

Well for someone that doesnt know a lot about computers there are some third party applications that will search and find recent drivers for you to download.

While these arent the best solution they do a decent enough job.

If you want to try to do it yourself you will need to get familiar with device manager

Please go to start>search>type device manager.
Are there any "unknown devices" with yellow triangles on them?
Is you driver there , listed, and working?

If your driver is missing, or there is a yellow triangle on it, you will need to update it.

If you right click any driver and go to driver they will tell you the date. Anything older than 7/13/09 needs to be updated if there is one.

How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

no problem it is not a big issue to do this but the man who sole the machine to you should have fully took care of that issue before the sell almost like selling a car with a defect and he knows it

but this is just a opinion im sure after you get the drivers worked out and such it will perform great

Hi zigzag3143 Thank you, I clicked Update and Windows says no updates available, there are no yellow triangles that I can see in device manager (I followed your instructions and found it ) but display adaptors driver is dated 17/08/2009, so I need to do something with the display ?

i doubt you need to do anything to the drivers if it is a laptop and no issues or conflicts dont worry about it leave it be unless requested by a new driver to be installed

other then this you should be alright

Its a Tsunami Dream tower and I got Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor with it Solarstarshines, but there are a lot of things on it that I'm not sure what they do ... yet

System Image is a backup of the hard drive
You can also make a system restore point (which to me is the best feature of 7)
of the OS. You have a problem, you can go back into time to when it was good
You also have back up and restore, to back up your documents.etc.

it reminds me my first machine, i did'nt own it though, at those times ownig a workstation costs too much. it was a sun workstation running some version of unix. it had emacs and i used it for lisp programming for my university...lot of my friends bought ibm pc for playing dungeons and dragons games(at those time those single tasking pc's had no actual usage as they cant host any serious stuff other than paint and those who cant prepare document by programming....groff and tex all the way) ....

i remember when i first used vi i had to turn off my terminal as i did not figure out how to get out of it. although the first experience was horrendous but eventually vi and emacs kind of made a love triangle with me. back those days compiler warning was so useless and debuggers are so primitive that sometimes programmers had to poke around the pure binary core dumps. our professor actually could find bugs in pure binary coredumps as he actually managed to remember all machine instruction numarically...
i bought a ibm pc in eary 90s when i first entered in a job field. it came with some version of windows , may be 3.1 but i'm not sure. although that machine is primarily used for playing card games.....

I note many members are using 64 bit, when I got my PC yesterday the guy gave me the Windows 7 disk in a blue box and there are two gold Windows disks one 32 bit and one 64 bit, I take it I just keep them ?, my PC has the 32 bit installed.

Yes, just keep them. You can switch form 32 or 64 as many times as you like. The rule is, however, one machine at a time.
You could also save them until you have a problem. Sometimes situations, like BSOD, require a reinstall. In that case, you have the DVD and you are all set. Sometimes the DVD can also be used for a procedure called a repair install. A repair install is used to fix problems with the OS, such as corruption.
