Solved My SATA devices show up as SCSI??

It must be (ab)normal. I have spared no expense and searched Google for similar issues. Some claim it's because of this or that, none of which apply to me.

Most say it is indeed "normal", but doesn't explain why my two machine show drives differently, one SCSI, the other simple SATA.

Jack, I earlier meant Fireberd who is also Jack. Are we all confused now?

I do believe that Fireberd understands that some members also have the same condition. I do believe that Fireberd also understands that so far none of the posters know exactly why it's that way but so far it hasn't caused anybody any problems.
Personally I believe SCSI is coming from the motherboard but can't prove it.

I'm fully aware that people from the USA aren't the only people who speak English and I didn't miss your location. Just because you live in England doesn't mean you were born there nor that English is your first language; you could have immigrated to England or had been born and raised in a non-English speaking immigrant household. I asked to try to understand why you have so much trouble understanding simple English. I now understand.

This Gigabyte motherboard has a "Marvell 91xx 6GB controller (x2)" according to the Belarc Advisor. Nothing about "SCSI" in the Belarc Advisor.

It all works, just wondered why the two programs listed "SCSI". Must be something in the Gigabyte motherboard.

Jack this has always puzzled me too. On my 3770K system it indeed lists storage drives as SCSI in AS SSD and Speccy. On my 2550K system it doesn't, all are connected to the native Intel SATA ports.

The above boards are both ASUS, drives all on Intel controllers, one lists SCSI, the other nope.

I have an AMD/Gigabyte system too, which also insists I have SCSI drives, connected via Marvell controller. IT is only a curiosity and doesn't effect performance nor function.
I think I once read it's the way w7 sees SATA drives due to speed, but it's inconsistent on my 3 systems. So I remain

I just installed Speccy on my dual boot Win 7/Win 8 system with the Gigabyte motherboard. The drives DO NOT show up as "SCSI". Thus it would appear to be something with Win 7?

My Intel board displayed the same until I installed this....

"Intel® Rapid Storage Technology Enterprise Driver for Intel® Desktop Boards"
It is something to do with Raid, however I do not use Raid.
It did fix this issue though.

I would research that your Intel based M/B may have something similar.

I have the Intel Rapid Storage Technology installed. Just something to do with the detection utilities and Win 7, at least on my Gigabyte motherboard.

I have w7 on all the machines I mentioned, with IASTOR on the Intel rigs. Still one is, one isn't. Just an oddity I guess, like pressing a start button to turn off.

I briefly researched this a few years back, but cannot remember exactly why the HDD interface showed as SCSI. But I do remember that it was not just a single condition that needed to be met, but several. For instance, the PC in my profile specs has an 2007 Phoenix-Award BIOS, and it offers what interface/mode you would like to apply to the drive. One option is to run the SATA drive in EIDE mode, or SATA mode. It also offers the option to run RAID, or not. When I apply the EIDE mode to a SATA drive, the drive does not show as an SCSI drive in Disk Management, but when I disable that option it does show up as an SCSI device. So that is one condition, and if my memory serves correctly, I believe the spread spectrum could also play a role in that. At any rate, it is not a hardware/software "glitch" that needs to be addressed. Bench tests showed no performance gain, or loss, due to this anomoly. So that is as far as I went with the issue, again, if I remember correctly.

I marked this solved even though the reason has not been resolved. Seems to be a hit and miss depending on specific hardware with Win 7.

I have had this problem of all my HDD plus my Samsung SSD 840 Pro Drive being listed as a SCSI Devices on and off for the past 2 years. It meant that I also could not de-frag the SSD drive using System Mechanic's SSD utility. Reading the forums never really solved the problem for me. Too many different points of view and possible solutions.

I eventually noticed that the problem originated when I first updated my SATA AHCI Driver and when I installed INTEL Rapid Storage software. I tried various versions of the latest SATA AHCI drivers but none of them worked except for the Standard AHCI 1.0 SATA Controller driver. I have also uninstalled INTELs Rapid Storage Technology.

So for me the problem is solved although again my solution might just be one of the many solutions out there. Got on to INTEL but they were not really interested.

No manufacture of SSD's recommend defragging a SSD.

INTEL Rapid Storage software causes many members BSOD problems.

I read an article a while back that said SSDs will eventually become fragmented enough that they will benefit from a defragging. This could take up to several years, however. Defragging an SSD once every year or two won't hurt it. After about two years of running pretty much 24/7, the fragmentation level on the SSD in my desktop rig was up to 14%. I defragged it back in October, using Win 7's native defragger. My expected remaining life, according to SSD Life, barely changed, maybe a month less, if that. It is now back up to a whopping 2% fragmentation. I'll do it again in another couple of years.

Edit: I never found the article I had read but I did find this one that summarizes a link to a more extensive article at the end of the brief article. Basically, Windows will do a form of defragging on its own. However, it won't hurt to manually do so once every year or two, depending on usage. I will probably never defrag the SSDs in my notebooks because they get so little usage.
