need advice on buying case

The XFX power supply, which will not be used since the other died and I had to put it back in the old PC, has markings for either way too, but even upside down the 8 pin and 24 pin leads were still too short to route through the back of the case.

As previously noted, I've ordered the extension cables from newegg (along with the new power supply). I should be set, either way with the new power supply and extension cables.

Well, the saga continues. The motherboard is defective. The first two memory slots (the two closest to the CPU) are defective and I get a POST error 55 (no memory detected). The other two memory slots work OK and all 4 memory modules will work in those two slots, so that elminates the memory. The memory I'm using is listed in the compatibility chart by ASRock for the motherboard.

Windows loaded OK and the ASRock drivers loaded OK.

I have the RMA from newegg and will ship it out tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about the bad ram lanes. ASRock will step up and replace this mobo quickly and you'll be up and running soon.

I just ordered parts from newegg to build a new system. ASRock Z77 Professional motherboard, i7 3770, SSD, etc. I ordered a Corsair Carbide 500R case (the 400 would work too, just decided on the white case color). I looked at a lot of cases before I settled on this one. My old system is using an Antec ninehundred case and it is a nice case, except it's not "toolless" and a hassle to add/swap hard drives or optical drives.

I hope that you have a lot better luck with your ASRock than I did with mine.

EDIT: Oops! I didn't see your post about the defective MB before I posted this. If it were me, I would take it as an opportunity to go Asus, instead of ASRock.

I checked on that XFX PSU and it is a re-branded Seasonic M12D and the main cables are 20.5 in. I have a Seasonic X750 and my main cables are 22.4 in. Two inches do make a difference, but those extensions should do the trick. What OCZ model did you get? I had a Mod-X-Stream 600 that failed after a year and OCZ replaced it with a Fatality 750. On my new system I went with Seasonic as they make a lot of other peoples units and have a great reputation.

The new power supply is an OCZ ZT Series 750 watt. I bought it as it is 100% modular, not partially modular like a lot of the "modular" power supplies. The 24 pin power cable, routed behind the motherboared, reaches the motherboard without an extension. But, I did have to use an extension on the 8 pin.

On the motherboard, it's a replacement only item with newegg. I'm shipping the old one back today. I had sent a query to ASRock and their response was to contact the seller and get an exchange.

I have started to buy stuff from amazon if the price is the same as neweggs since I am a prime member and get 2 day shipping on anything shipped by amazon.

I stopped dealing with Newegg several years ago, but for an entirely different reason. However, I did have a similar problem with an RMA that I sent directly to AMD years back, in which they returned the processor that I sent with a pin bent totally flat. Due to the fact that the pin was in the center of the pin array, and no other pin was effected, I know that it was not an accident. I would go to another brand of processor, but there is no alternative that I would accept.

It's always good to be aware of horror stories like this one, especially when you have been using somebody like NewEgg for so many years without having issues. I've had very good luck with NewEgg. My RMA experience through is almost non-existent as everything that I have ordered has been right, and working properly.

The orders set for days and never moved, no update, no shipping, etc. I cancelled the Amazon orders (there was more than 1) and ordered the parts from newegg and they were shipped within hours of the order. I've had other Amazon orders that took up to a week to ship (for "in stock" items). I don't know why I tried ordering again from them.

The only thing I've had a problem with, with newegg, is this ASRock motherboard. I've bought a lot of components from them, including an Intel motherboard and never had a problem.

The big difference between Amazon and Newegg, is that Amazon uses a lot of other vendors to supply certain orders, which they have no direct control over. They are a little bit like eBay in that respect, except that eBay does have better buyer protection. I generally only order from Amazon if they are the direct supplier.

Were your items shipped and sold by amazon? That is what I look for when buying items that are more than a few dollars.

All the items on the last two orders (listed as in stock) that never got anywhere were Amazon stocked items, not a 3rd party. I have had no difference in order processing time direct from Amazon or from 3rd parties on previous items.

With the problems on the last two items, Amazon will not be my "first choice".

Newegg now tells me there are bent pins in the socket and its customer damaged and they will not honor their replacement. I should have known better as I've seen other posts on forums about this identical claim that the customer damaged pins. I have done a lot of business with newegg but this ends it. It also ends my refering clients or internet users to newegg.

That's disgusting and gives me serious pause about Newegg as I know you are a reliable guy despite the Emmons setup.

At one time, I bought 100% from Newegg. In the last few years, I have cut that back to maybe 70% with the remainder going to Amazon direct (not Amazon resellers).

I assume your credit card company will be no help?

I wonder if this is "officially" a Newegg policy or if you ran into a rogue team of some type who would be fired if superiors knew the truth?

Can they possibly be selecting a certain percentage of returns for sabotage--entirely at random?

All i know is that if I ever have to return a product to NewEgg, I am going to take a picture first and send it with the motherboard in question so they can see that the pins are not damaged.

Are all of these returns with AMD processors, because Intel hasn't used actual pins in quite some time now.

If that were the case, it wouldn't matter if you had a photo or not. They would just claim that it was taken prior to the damage being done and the item shipped.

As for the bent pins, it is my understanding that AMD will cover up to five bent pins under their warranty, but then with my experience with their inept RMA dept. I would simply straiten them myself, if possible. I'm curious why you were sending the processor back in the first place, since I was under the impression that the motherboard was the problem?

Asus RMA through newegg have the same issue/excuse.

Tbh, I'm not sure if it's newegg or the board makers themselves issuing edicts about using bent pins as an excuse to get out of offering replacements.


The 'bent pin' excuse is popular with some popular Australian retailers too.


But feel free to try contacting them and good luck either way.

I think it is an Intel based Motherboard which has pins on the CPU socket. AMD has the pins on the CPU.
