I have a 5 year old Sony Vaio, W7 64 bit professional, 8 mb ram and a Intel core i3 CPU [email protected] GHz. Is it possible to upgrade my cpu to an interl core i7 cpu and if so do I need to buy any other parts like a motherboard?

I wouldn't even risk it. You're only gonna spend more than upgrading a desktop's processor.

You`d have to find the upgrade specs for your motherboard online. We have no idea because you did not give us any information to go with.

If you had to get a new motherboard to upgrade to an i5 or an i7 then you are talking about building an entirely new PC, which will cost plenty of money.

On a Laptop, hardware upgrade isn't a simple task as on a desktop.
- Heat - a i7 delivers much more heat than a i3 and the heat sink was developed to the i3.
- Bios - If the BIOS wasn't written to support a i7, it may run, but won't use all i7 features.

As Siw suggested, install a SSD and do a clean install. You'll have a big performance bust.
Buy a USB case for the HDD.

Worldwide, 99.999% of PC's, both laptop and desktop, are so poorly set up and maintained that they will operate at below 50% efficiency.

As a working computer tech, I can say that just cleaning up and tweaking the OS, I can improve most PC's performance by 100%. For most users, adding an SSD or even more ram is just not in the budget, even if they have the expertise to do the work.

I regularly hear from a new customer, "dang, it didn't run that fast when it was new!!!" I know.

The internet is a good source of tips to improve the performance of any OS from Windows 95 to Windows 10. For most people, changing a CPU is just not in the cards. Most motherboards are built and programmed for the CPU chip installed at the factory, and that's the only one they will accept.
After-Market motherboards, like from Gigabyte, Biostar, Asus, etc. are much more flexible and can usually accept a number of different CPU's within the cpu brand....i.e. Intel or AMD.

Good Luck and Happy New Year!
