Solved Need help deciphering CBS.log for laptop issues

I've been tasked with trying to get a Dell laptop back up to speed, and have reached the limits of my technical ability. I've run the usual suspects to eliminate malware (Malwarebytes & a boot-time scan with Avast). SFC has been run numerous times (at least 6), but can't cope with whatever it has found. I've attached the last CBS log (I had to zip it). My brief glimpse of the file reveals corrupted source files, which makes sense that it can't fix it. There is one file relating to a windows update KB, and multiple instances of a corrupted driver.

One problem the laptop has shown is the inability to save changes to services.msc (I was trying to keep some of the Dell bloatware at bay while I worked). Another is it's inability to connect to the internet either wired or wifi. It does connect via USB tether with my phone. I've devoted the last several days trying to get that fixed, but have not had any luck.

Hello and welcome DealerMan mate that is a lot of corrupted files and I only glanced at the first few

Now try running this in safe mode
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f switch and if this does not make any improvement then just run this switch instead /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs – you can leave out the /r switch in ckdsk if you feel it not necessary

See if that makes any difference and the net connection you need to updated the drivers for the WLAN nad the LAN now I would first do the Intel WLAN and the Marvell LAN from here Support for Inspiron 1545 | Dell Australia and I think I would even do the chipset too. The others are not that important at the moment.

Now you used MBAM but run these too but try to get onto the net not using the phone first it is too dodgy for my liking.

ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

Thanks for your help! I've installed the Marvell controller and the Dell wireless items, but the chipset I wanted to ask about. Are you referring to the Intel chipset (Intel GM45 v 9.1.1?).

first thing we have to do is repair the boot manager thats corrupt as well,
follow the instructions here.

The mobo has not been touched as far as I know. I do know that it came with Vista originally (at least according to the sticker on the wrist rest).

Oh, how I love a challenge.... lol

Edit: I'm not getting any error messages for the MBR...

Well your last post explains a couple things..

It came with vista??

according to the log it was shipped with W7,

please re-run the report
running it in safe mode corrupts it.

Good news part 1: Wired internet is working, haven't tried wireless yet (brand-new Technicolor modem has flaky wireless anyway).

that looks a lot better,
Start-up repair will NOT correct, the other problems.
I believe this comp was set-up to pre-empt W7.
(ie it was sold as W7 ready).

Now as for your current issues, somebody has been playing around with it, before you and they have basically totally ***** it.
Your best, (and i think only), bet is a clean install

Torchwood, ICIT2LOL, many thanks for your help! As for product keys, etc, I've got a Belarc Advisor printout with everything I need. It appears that I'll get my wish, to reinstall W7 without KB2952664 and its associated grief! LOL

Ok look s like Roy has got this by the scruff of the neck

Now I don't know if it will work for you but I have used this to find the codes for the OS and other Microsoft software eg Office see my pic
Product Key Number for Windows 7 - Find and See
You can use both Showkey and Magic Jelly Bean (Option 2 and 3) in those links and I find using both should produce identical codes - for the OS and Office well the code for the OS in Showkey only MJB does them all.

NB The Showkey may balk at running in 7 you need to extract it then run it and as your system is not quite right now might not run at all. It may show as a PUP with whatever AV you have running too.

Now I should have said to you before you did the install - save the drivers for the LAN and WLAN on a stick because if you are reinstalling it possibly is going to format over those drivers that got the net on, and you might find yourself stuck again..

Freshly installed (about 20 minutes more or less), internet works great! I installed KB3102810, and windows update took about 8 minutes (maybe less) to find about 147 important updates, and about 50 optional. Now enjoying my caffeine while I stupid-vise.
