Solved Need help extracting registry keys from a .reg file

Hi,

I recently restored my notebook back to factory default. I backed up most of everything manually
including the registry which I basically just exported as a .reg file. I don't want to restore the registry,
just keys to certain programs I want to restore.

I've read that one method is to create a temporary hive in the registry, but this seems extremely
dangerous as my pc suffers from BSODs from time to time. If this were to happen before I could
remove the hive, I have no doubt my pc would be destroyed.

If anyone knows a safer method I would greatly appreciate your input.

You should solve the BSOD issue before putting more time/effort into setting up this computer.

A ".REG" file is just text. Open it in notepad and search for what you want.

I've been trying to fix the BSOD problem for several years. I have limited internet access and few resources so it's
going very slow. By restoring back to default I think I have eliminated my software or viruses as possible causes.

I opened the .reg file in Notepad++, copied the key I wanted, and pasted it in a new .reg file.
The registry would not accept it because it was not binary.

You need to keep this...

...at the top of the text file.

I received an 'error accessing registry'.

I took a snap shot of the error and the .reg file.
the reg file is included too.

Try the attached reg file.

You probably don't have the same user SID.

It is slowly coming back to me. I ran into this problem several years back. I ended up manually entering in the info via regedit. Let's see if other forum members know of a better way to handle this.

Use [HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\...] hive instead of [HKEY_USERS\...]
