Need Help Replacing corrupt autochk.exe and defragproxy.dll files

My computer was/is running horribly slow. Opening a webpage will make the CPU jump to almost 100% for a bit. So I decided to use UltraDefrag, but when I tried to analyze my c:\ drive, it closed and recommended that I run chkdsk. So I scheduled chkdsk to run, but it would not run on restart. I ran sfc /scannow it said that both autochk.exe and defragproxy.dll were corrupt and it could not fix them. The problem is that the only Windows 7 disc I have for it is a reinstall disc from Dell. How can I fix this. so I can defrag my laptop? I can I download the files from Microsoft. I aldready tried this hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778/en-us. My laptop is a Dell Latitude E6400. Can I copy the files from my brothers Windows 7 laptop? He has a E6410.

The key thing is the files must be the right version is 64 or 32 bit and the same service pack date and time

I just remembered that I have an Windows install disc from my Dad's computer. Could I use that to repair my Windows 7 install? Remember I have a Dell OEM Windows 7 install.

Hi John,

You could use either to perform a repair install.
BUT they need to include SP1, assuming your comp is upto date.

Please try KB947821 first its a repair tool.

If not i'll get you a link for a W7 SP1 download.

If it finds bad clusters or bad blocks, it is time to replace your HDD and add a small SSD for windows and programs.

Megahertz07, I got this drive a couple months ago from Western Digital after I dropped my laptop. I hope I don't have to replace it again. That was a pain to reinstall everything.

HDD are very sensitive to laptop moves while spinning. You will be surprised what a SSD can do for your laptop.

I booted into a Windows 7 upgrade disc I had and ran

chkdsk c: /r

. It fixed some stuff, but after I rebooted into Windows

src /scannow

said that autochk.exe and defragproxy.dll had hashes that didn't match. I was able to open UltraDrag and run it, but couldn't get it to run a chckdsk on reboot.

Note: I couldn't use the kb975778 because it did not apply to my computer.

been following the BC thread.

Its better to just clear 1 issue at at a time, multiple input from different threads hinders more than helps.

torchwood, sorry for the confusion. This thread is for a seperated Windows 7 computer. This is for a Dell Latitude D630. The mysterious folder thread is for a Windows 7 tower I have. Two different situations on two different Windows 7 machines.

Finally, an update

torchwood - I apologize for taking so long to reply. I got busy and forgot about this problem. I tried to clone my hard drive using EaseUS TODO Backup Home and it failed. I tired to installed kb947821 like you recommended. However, It said that it was not applicable to my system. Is it possible to use Linux to repair ,y disk so I can get an image of the drive?
