Need Help!!!! Router or OS Config?

I just recently upgraded my desktop to Windows 7 and ran into an issue with internet connectivity. Here is a rundown of everything that I have and that has occured so far, just so you can see where I am at with the issue. Any help/input will be appreciated. I have a Linksys Wireless N Router hooked up now. I have the following hooked up to it:

• Desktop (Windows 7 Ultimate) Wired to Router
• XBOX 360 Wired to Router
• HP NetBook (Windows 7 Starter) wireless connection
• HP G62 (Windows 7 Home Premium) wireless connection

My upgrade of my desktop to Windows 7 was flawless. Works great! Except it could not detect an internet connection. It was still wired with the ethernet cord from the router, just as it was setup when it was ruinning Windows XP. So i loaded to Router CD hoping that would fix the problem. It didn't. So I pressed the reset button on the router. All that did was wipe my wireless network. The error I kept getting when trying to run the router software was that "No ethernet cable detected". Everything was hooked up correctly. So to ensure I had internet into my house, I ran the cable straight from my modem to all 4 devices listed above. Only the XBOX 360 and the HP Netbook recognized the cable and had internet. The other 2 had nothing. So the next step was running a wired connection from one port on the router to all 4 devices. Again only the HP Netbook and XBOX 360 recognized the cable. So I was able to set back up my network through the router with the Netbook. I also luckily had a wireless Linksys USB adapter so I could get internet on my desktop (which used to be a wired connection, but it wont recognize it now). So through all of this I am guessing this is an issue with settings on the Desktop and Laptop (Windows 7). Im lost on what to do to get back to my original setup (wired connection on my desktop.) I tried 2 different routers with the same outcome. Please help

I think this is very simple.
You need to install the drivers for the network interface card that is in your desktop.
Look on the website of the manufacturer of the desktop for Win 7 drivers.
XP drivers won't work on Win 7. Windows 7 contains many drivers for many pieces of hardware but it seems it doesn't have any for the NIC in your desktop.
As to the HP G62 is that a notebook?

Hi, welcome to the forums

As stated above, visit HP Download Site and select Drivers and Software, input G62 into the box and click Search. Select the exact model you have from the list. You're looking for the Local Area Network (LAN) Driver.

Dell Dimension 4600

The desktop in question is a Dell Dimension 4600. I went to the dell website and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. If anyone could help me out with a link, it would be appreciated.

Looking at the Dell website and looking up your model there are no drivers for Win 7, in fact Dell doesn't even list Win 7 as a compatible OS for that system.

The looking at the Win 7 compatibility "More Details" page your system isn't listed. In fact only 2 Dimension desktops are listed.


You need to open Device Manager and look to see if there is even a network card listed. If there is does it have a driver associated with it.

I Know that all dell computers have a TAG on their computers and use that to find the exact driver needed....

That is true except when Dell does not support newer OSs on older systems.
They do not make/distribute drivers for older systems for newer OSs.
In fact Dell doesn't even list Vista as a OS for the OPs system. That is how old it is.
Looking at a C-NET review from back in 2005. That makes that system 6+ years old. And it was a budget model.

So he is going to have to hunt around to find Win 7 drivers. At least for those not included on the Win 7 DVD.

No post back from the OP as to any device manager problems with the NIC. So it may not be a NIC driver problem.

Ouch... 6+ years... time for an upgrade....PONG is so 80's....

I think the TAG was the only thing Dell did right. My mom got a dell before I moved back and it was so sluggish. I had to put in new ram... new power supply, new dvd and take off Vista just for it to catch up to the 21st century.

Thanks for all of the input!! It was all in the drivers. The desktop is 6 or 7 years old, but the processor in it is still running strong. Hard drive, video card and RAM upgrades for only abour $200 total have it running like a champ. Its funny that Dell doesnt list it as compatible, because it definitely is. I think I paid almost $1,000 for it , custom made back then, just for the tower, so I have been able to get every penny out of it. No need to throw away.

Right no need to throw away. But to use it as your main desktop?
Better to buy/build something new and set that system as a file storage unit.

I have one very old Dell, P3 1GHz with 512MB RAM running XP SP1, that I bought refurbed and has been running 24/7 for the last 7 years. I have it stocked with HDDs and no monitor connected to it. I access it with Remote desktop if I need to do anything to it.
the only thing that has failed on it was the power supply fan, which I replaced, and the CPU cooling fan, again I replaced that with a fan I had laying around.
