Posted this on another help forum, removed, and reddit but no one responded, hopefully some of you can help me out with this 'cos it's driving me up the wall.

I've been trying to download a torrent using Nordvpn, I have set up the socks5 proxy (is it needed?) and switched to P2P, but I can't download and this is all I get on utorrent: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

The config: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

Turning off the socks5 proxy, and even nordvpn still gives me that blank/empty page on utorrent.

Wondering what I'm doing wrong. Now I think if I put the recommended server in utorrent, and put the same server in Nord it would work, although I'm not 100% on how to do that, unless maybe with OpenVPN or something.

When I re-installed utorrent I got it to work, however I don't think the proxy/vpn was working with it, so it worked but it may not be secure. Chances are I won't get caught and nothing will happen when downloading the odd torrent without a vpn but I don't want to chance it, as I'm sure you'd understand.

edit: changed the server in nord to the recommend one manually and put the same one in utorrent, along with my login details for nord (email for user and password). Still no luck.

Okay so after re-installing utorrent and deleting the resume files, and setting up that proxy again with p2p in Nord, it's finally downloading. Just wondering if I should do anything else (then again if it ain't broke don't fix it right?) or if it's set up correctly.

I had nothing but issues with uTorrent and my VPN so I tried QBittorrent and so far so good after about three years now. Keep in mind that your VPN may have "optimized" P2P server locations or VPN locations that allow you to use all 65535 ports. That is the server location you want to use. But preferably one that is closest to you. If you want to go super secret than use a non-five eyes jurisdiction like Romania, Switzerland, Iceland and a handful of others.

As to VPNs, read my post on my site here about that. Nord may not be all that it's cracked up to be. Two that I can recommend are VPN.AC and Protonvpn. VPN.AC accepts many forms of payment and even the very secure Monero cryptocurrency. You really don't want to use Bitcoin as that has a block chain which is pretty much like a receipt. Unless you use two wallets and launder your coins, Bitcoin is not recommended.

Fun fact: Did you know uTorrent used to pack a bitcoin miner in its software?

Edit-

Looks like Nord may be alright. Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, and 14 Eyes (In-Depth Explanation)

I'm really new to trying a VPN. If I sign up on my desktop does that mean my TV in the living room with the firestick is protected too? I'm thinking yes, but not sure.

No. The VPN would have to be setup in the router for ALL communications to go through the VPN.

Problem with that is sometimes you'll run into road blocks using a VPN full time. So you'd want to VLAN a non-VPN connection for other stuff and use a VPN for the I'm assuming the Kodi Firestick install.

Here's a tutorial for Kodi. OpenVPN on OpenELEC/LibreELEC Kodi - Knowledgebase - vpn.ac

The rest. Looks like you need an account. I have no idea why he did that. Tutorials - VPN.AC

Connect Your Home Router to a VPN to Bypass Censorship, Filtering, and More

Or, instead of running one router with the VPN on full time, use two routers. One with that's an ASUS flashed with ASUS Merlin or DD-WRT and using the VPN and one without the VPN. You would then use a switch from the modem to connect both routers. Give the router SSID with the VPN a name you know is the VPN like 'VPN' and the other router a SSID name like 'open' or what ever you want.

This really is a nerd task and I can do it, but that's because I read lots of info. on how to do it. Do the same and learn how to do it and you'll know how.
