I had the bit-torrent client Vuze installed but uninstalled it recently. I found dozens of files they leave behind in the computer even after uninstalling. Tracked down and deleted them all but one file is refusing to delete. When I try to delete, I get a window with message "unable to carry out the task.......etc, with an error code 0x80004005. The file name is:

AZUREUS sig
C:\Users\MELITA\AppData\Local\Temp\azlocprov_0.1.6.2.zip Type: SIG File

Can you tell me how I can delete this?

Thank you

I think I'll try one of the free tools. UNLOCKER and Malwarebytes; are both these free of adware and other things that are bundled with some of these free programmes.

Thank you

You can also try to delete it in 'safe' mode.

Malwarebytes is clean if you get it from a reliable source, haven't heard about the other.

Thanks to all of you who replied so far. How do I find a reliable source for malwarebytes as mentioned by Berton. Almost every source trick you in to planting something in your computer. Recently I nearly got caught to Adobe Flash Player!

I tried deleting in safe mode but failed. The same error code as above. In fact I found 7 other azureus items at the location of the original file (please see attachment). All of them refuse to delete; same error code.
I also checked the properties of all 8 files. I have attached an image of the 'Properties' window of one of the files. All the 8 files are located in the Archive Root Directory. All characteristics are the same except for the size, CRC 32 and Index, which defer from one another.

I am not knowledgeable enough to interpret anything from the 'properties' window. Can you please help?

Regards

The link I provided in Post # 3 is the official Malwarebytes download site. If you're given the choice of a "custom" install, use that. You can then make sure no additional "stuff" is added to the download.

Try this tutorial and see if it helps Take Ownership of file
If Melita could not delete the file as a result of file ownership, a very different error message would be recieved, such as "You need permission from user to perform this action"

I do recommend Unlocker. Lightweight and fast, it has never failed to delete the most stubbon of files (at least for myself). A direct download can be found here.

Could you please tell me, from what sort of a web site is this direct download link. Is it a trustworthy one? Why is it not possible to download directly from 'Unlocker' web site?

Unlocker from the supplied link is marked as a virus by 7 out of 53 engines at Virustotal as well as the download was stopped by Comodo IS which might or might not be a false positive. However try this link IObit Unlocker Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives which didn't trigger any alerts on either Virustotal or by Comodo. It is a portable version so no need to actually instal it just run from the folder where you saved it. Of course you have to decide for yourself if you trust it or not and look for online reviews of the product

Let's see if AdwCleaner can detect and get rid of this file:

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop. Follow both steps.

Step 1.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.

Step 2.
Using AdwCleaner v3: Scan & Clean:
This time click on the Clean button.
Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder

******Post both .txt logs

This appears to be something to do with a Java 'archive'
http://www.backgroundtask.eu/Systeemtaken/taakinfo/455194/azlocprov_0.1.6.2.jar/

After you've posted the .txt results, we'll clean temps and old Java installs.

Hello jacee,

Thank you very much for the above. It appears that AdwCleaner installs Ask Tool Bar. In their website there is a notice to the effect that it is used by them . Please see attachment. This is not to my liking.

Could you tell me whether there is a portable version of this, which I would very much prefer.

Thank you,
Best regards

It sounds to me that Antivir Webguard uses the ASK tool bar and Adwcleaner removes it. The warning says:
If you remove ASK by using Adwcleaner, Antivir Webguard will no longer work properly.

The link I gave you does NOT include "ask.com" or any other PUP! ..... it's a clean/adware free download!

I wholeheartedly agree with Jacee. If one gets AdwCleaner from Bleeping Computer it is clean of anything including PUP.
It is the only one I use and I use it several times a month.

Very strange!! I use IE 11 and have smart filter turned on ... I don't get that warning.
Let's run an online antivirus scan with ESET.

  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the
    esetOnline.png
    button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on
      esetSmartInstall.png
to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the
      esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png
      icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
    esetAcceptTerms.png
  5. Click the
    esetStart.png
    button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
    esetScanArchives.png
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
    esetListThreats.png
  11. Push
    esetExport.png
, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the
    esetBack.png
    button.
  13. Push
    esetFinish.png
