Need Help With Basic Protection

Yes, Internet Explorer is a browser. Other major browsers include Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. It's the thing you use to go to different places on the Internet---whether that's here, or Yahoo.com, or whatever.

Are you going to take Greg up on his offer to help you remotely if you can install Team Viewer??

That's probably the way to go if you can get Team Viewer going and coordinate your schedule with his.

Otherwise, you are going to get distracted into side issues such as Malwarebytes, browsers, etc.

Yes I'd like for Greg to help me. I'm also havign problems with typos for some reason. Keeps mispelling.

I pressed the ATL key and it brought up the Menu Bar. Do I want to turn it off ?

Why did you press ALT? What were you trying to do?

You need to develop a plan rather than doing things haphazardly.

Greg is your best bet unless you want to surrender yourself to the Geek Squad or worse. I'd go with Greg, easily.

You have ONLY a dial-up connection?? I'm not sure if that would cause a problem with downloading and installing Team Viewer. You would need Team Viewer as it is the program that would allow Greg to work on your PC from his location.

I don't think Greg looks in this "Security" forum much.

But he did see your thread called "Geek Squad at Best Buy".

I noticed you made a new post there within the last hour. I would post in that thread rather than this thread because Greg might not see this thread.

He also looks in the "Installation" forum frequently. But he should see your "Geek Squad" posts.

You need to make him aware that you have dial-up only and see what he says about that.

Team Viewer is here:

TeamViewer - Free Remote Control, Remote Access & Online Meetings

It's not as big as I thought--only 7.3 MB.

I think I need some hands on. Greg may help me. I'm really not good with fixing problems or tech language. I didn't know what a browser was until now.:) I may beed to do it the hard way if I can't access Team Viewer though. Thank you .

I would go ahead and download Team Viewer now. Don't install it yet.

Just download it and then wait until you have made contact with Greg one way or another. Let him know you are on dialup.

It might take an hour or more to download 7.3 MB on dialup. I can't recall exactly how slow dialup can be.

Download it to the PC that is having the problems, not the tablet.

If it turns out you cannot use Team Viewer, you can just delete it later.

I'll send Greg a private message on your behalf.

Your downloads will land in a specific folder on your PC, but I'm not sure where that might be in your case.

I went to download Team Viewer and it advised me to first uninstall security ' that's what I think it meant'. So I uninstalled Adobe Reader, Adobe flash, HP Hotkeysupport and Malwarbytes so far. Should I also temporary uninstall MSE?

Stop. Don't uninstall anything else.

Or maybe you have not actually attempted a download yet.

I just downloaded the first one on the list (All-In-One: TeamViewer full version v10.0.36897) and was NOT asked to uninstall anything.

You aren't providing enough detail in your answers.

You may just be digging a deeper hole and should probably quit digging.

Wait for Greg.

Ok, will do. I got online in 2002 for first time so I could email son in ,military after 911. Never typed or touched a computer. So I kept it basic and just went to a couple discussion sites and youtube. So hues I was lucky for 12 years. Son kept up my security and helped with little problems. I joined FB but since I'm clueless to the younger generation mostly ignored there too so I am now off fb but hubby is still 'fishing' there. I taught my now grown grandkids many things, snow skiing , snorkling, Fishing , Swimming ,roller skating, softball for girls, baseball for 1 g-son, etc, etc, etc,. 6 of them spent every summer with us ands there were many beach trips or mountain camping. So I'm a little upset to have to ask for help but we do what we have to do. I'm not ready for the old folks home yet and no bucket list although it has been suggested by one of my daughters to check out assisted living. Any help here is very appreciated.

Ok, will do.............Any help here is very appreciated.

OK.

Greg will likely completely reconfigure your system and clean it out.

You should mention to him that you may have uninstalled Adobe Flash and Malwarebytes and anything else you are unsure about.

Have you in fact paid for the paid version of Malwarebytes? Or did your credit card cancellation mean that didn't happen?

You could use the free version of Malwarebytes, but in your situation the paid version is probably better because it PREVENTS bad stuff from getting on your PC. The free version does NOT prevent. It just REMOVES bad stuff after it gets on your PC.

Malwarebytes and MSE work OK together and should be sufficient for your purposes.

But worry about that later. Mention it to Greg.

The first priority is to ensure you have a working and clean PC. Then worry about Malwarebytes.

I've never known Greg to be gone from these forums more than 24 to 48 hours, so he should be along soon enough. I did send him a private message about your situation.

This is a safe site with reliable help. You should continue to be wary of scams or trying to get help from unfamiliar sources--800 numbers, Geek Squad, etc.
