hello so i just upgraded my internet for free :D its now 60mb/s down, 8mb/s up out of the modem. however over wireless im getting about 1/2 that speed. i have a netgear WNR2000-100NAS 802.11b/g/n 300mbps router. currently the only settings i have changed are my password, 20/40mhz coexistence, and set it to 300mbps mode.

now out of the modem im getting 60 down. when i connect my laptop to the router via Ethernet, i get 58 down. over wifi even rite next to the router im getting barly 30 down. but in all cases, i am reciving the full 8 upload speed reguardless of wifi or not. how can i increase this to the 60 i should be getting?

Hello Quadrider10,

I had the exact same problem once before when my ISP upgraded my service. The fix for me was updating the firmware on the router, once complete all was up to full speed including WiFi.

Most routers sold within the last 5 years have a built in feature for upgrading the firmware that is quite painless as long as you have an internet connection, however if yours does not have internet or that feature you will need to go to the manufacturer's website (from a different computer or internet connection) and download the firmware for your specific router and upload them manually as follows:

  • download the firmware and save to desktop for easy access
  • On your problem router's network, open the web GUI to the router (open any web browser and type in the IP address of your router)
  • navigate to the *update/upgrade firmware* section typically in advanced, or administrator, or setup something to that effect (varies on router manufacturer)
  • select *browse* for a file to upload and select the file you saved on your desktop earlier
  • power cycle the router if it doesn't do this automatically (some routers don't require a power cycle, but I still suggest it because it's really a better idea to implement a new running config properly, especially in a home environment where there are no corporate servers depending on the connection)

This is all just a guess though, without further details on your router it will be hard to guess the correct problem and in turn propose the right solution.

You should call your ISP to see if your Modem /Router is up to date with there systems

I called my ISP when they upgraded my service and they had to re register my Modem with there service in order for it to work correctly
