Dear All,
How can i give a particular user say "xyz"(standard user) just read-only to access to some files/folders in my machine ?
Reason is my cousin bro will be visiting me soon..so i have created a standard user "xyz" for him..i don't want him to mess up my data. He can copy the files from the desktop to any ext device he plugs in but shud not be able to cut-paste or delete my files.
One more thing guys, is it possible to have the protection on even in safe-mode?

Thanks in advance,
Troy.

You certainly can restrict his access, but I wonder if you're this concerned why are you giving him access at all. His level of expertise is the issue. If he is a regular user not a geek, hacker, etc you can make all of your files, folders, etc invisible to him. you can change his rights so he cant even read them, but if he is good enough (or curious enough) he will find a way.

So what would you like to do exactly?

Ken

that is technically not possible...
you will still need to let him access certain parts of the c: drive....

it would actually be better to make him a guest account as this further locks down the system... (usually the guest does not have read/write access to hardrives...;))

if you disable Use the Sharing Wizard you will get the old style win 2000 security tab back on each file\folder\drive (this is a Folder Options in the Control Panel)...
folder.PNG

using that you can make him have only read and execute access....
usersdrive.PNG
deny him everything else and as of now you have locked the drive and made it impossible from his account to be able to do any changes to that drive...;)
