I have a dual boot system running XP and 7 on an ASUS P5QSE - and all works fine.

Research suggests I need to get AHCI running as I want to add a SSD for system drive.

Looked in BIOS - cannot find anything AHCI

Is this because I have no drives installed that would need AHCI? or that my BIOS does not support AHCI?

When a SSD is installed does AHCI option become visible?

Still learning so please excuse if this seems a dumb question.

Presumably (if a solution is achieved) AHCI is enabled on a drive by drive basis as I want to keep HDD's in use for data.

Help and advice appreciated.

You have a very old computer. (LGA775 socket)
I don't believe it came with AHCI.
You could check with Asus and see if their is a bios update to take care of this. They probably don't. Asus also wants to to upgrade to a newer system.
Realistically their is much you can do with such a old system in my opinion.

There should be 3 options in the bios. IDE. AHCI or Raid. Under the Advanced tab look for drive configuration.

Not all bios will have all 3, you are fine with IDE. You have 6 sata 3Gbps ports so you`re good.

Motherboards - P5Q SE - ASUS

The thing is, if you have XP installed in IDE mode, then installed 7 in AHCI mode, you would have to make that change every time in the bios to boot into either system.

Don't worry about AHCI. Keep running in IDE. That is only a smidgen slower than AHCI. You probably would not even notice the difference.

And keep XP far away from the SSD. XP does not support Trim. That would really slow down your SSD.

Ok - thanks everyone - AHCI I will do without for the time being - I am convinced the boost from SSD will be satisfying enough in itself.
