Hi Web. Not sure I quite understand your question? How do you plan on powering your speakers if you are not looking for an AV Receiver?

What is your budget? What is the rest of your components, ie; speakers, subwoofer etc. Older AV Receivers may not be able to process a 4K signal, but there are many newer ones out there that can.

thanks for your response Misfit im not totally sure what im looking for, was using a (sony str-dg910) but wouldn't sync sound and picture on 4K so had to remove, im left with all speakers in place wires and all just need something to plug them all in, then I will send the sound signal from tv to the said something preferably by optical out, the said something would be powered by mains and have to work with 4K, didn't want AV because only need the sound not audio video

The “AV” in AV Receiver is just a terminology used by the industry. The Video portion is a pass though while the receiver processes the surround sound modes. Some AV receivers can upconvert a lower resolution video source such as a VCR (remember those) or DVD to HD. Outside the Surround Sound processor and amplifier an AV Receiver is just a switching device to allow you to connect multiple sources.

Not knowing your TV so I can’t say for certain but the majority will not process 5.1 surround sound through their Optical out. All the ones I have seen output only 2 channel stereo through their optical out. You will have to look at the specification of your TV to see if 5.1 surround sound is possible through its optical out (called Toslink). Never the less you still need an AV Receiver to process the surround sound modes and amplify your speakers. If you would like to let me know your budget and what speakers you are using (this is actually important) I can assist in choosing a few.

What are you using to output the 4k? The humax you talked about only supports up to 1080p. What model are your satellites?

Should have mentioned this before but many AV Receivers have delay adjustment for the audio should they be out of sync with the picture – even your Sony DG910 has this. And, some TV’s will also have this adjustment as well.

As for AV Receivers – many options to choose from but stay away from the cheap stuff, even from the big Japanese names. As the saying goes – you get what you pay for. Look for ones that are 4K compatible or are spec with HDMI 2.0.

Look up a few and if you have any questions post them on this thread. Good luck!

at the moment just TV speakers not that bad to be honest but nothing like my old (Sony str-dg910) system need to upgrade even it would work, satellites are Sony SS-v315, but not essential

No I meant the device sending the audio and video to your tv, also as Misfit stated you can hook up your old sony av again and try out the audio syncing settings to see if this fixes it for you. Depending on source(desktop vs laptop) I need to set my delay a bit. I only use 1080p 3D though.

sorry the audio video is built into TV as a HD Free view affair just listening through TV speakers at moment, old Sony is for sale, good unit for 1080p, but need to move on for 4K set up

the standard is to route through hdmi your source to a proper receiver (in your case with 4k passthrough) and then to the tv from there. That is all digital. if your tv is the source then you would just use its optical out or if it has a hdmi out even better. What model is your tv web?

What I would do in your situation if you still have the Sony is make the tv output sound to the optical out and run just it to your sony avamp. If your looking for an all around 4k solution you will need to ask others though since I only have experience even at 4k with budget avamps. My avamp is a onkyo tx-nr525 and it has decent 4k passthrough but very limited sound capability. If your tv plays the video fine you might be better off sending it to the tv then sound to the Sony if the you only have like two devices.

If your tv plays the video fine you might be better off sending it to the tv then sound to the nosy if the you only have like two devices.

herd this term a few times not sure what it means i.e."4K Passthrough' does this mean it will let the video source just go thought not mess with it ? ... at all ? ... or are some passthrough's not as good as others and do mess with it ........ and what about the sound, or this about sound

I'm not sure what you mean by this sound also I meant sony and not nosy lol, the 4k passthough if a true passtrough will not touch the signal, that is correct. It will only take its sound signal from it to use for the receiver. The difference when talking 4k is that a receiver with 1.4 HDMI will passthrough 4k at 24/30 fps max and a HDMI 2.0 receiver can do it in that as well as 60fps (if the source can handle it).
Hope this helps answer at least some of your questions.

EDIT: CNET explains it well here. HDMI 2.0: What you need to know - CNET

let me try ask this again because I still don't quiet get it, so the term pass-through doesn't mean it will pass-through unchanged, but it will past through to best of the ability of the said AV which will most probable be HDMI 1.4 or lower fps than 4K, so 4K pass-through of a lesser AV or most things on the market at the moment that state 4K pass-through would reduce picture quality? yes
