In the past in other versions of windows I have been able to make the delay time when moving from a context box to a selection that is off to the side of the context box. Explaining this properly is hard but I will try. When I have some kind of context box open that has an arrow head off to the side that will show more selections related to the selection I have my mouse over and then I go to slide off to the side to make make another selection and if I don't slide exactly straight out then by the time my mouse gets over to the side selection it all disappears. I need more time delay before that side box disappears as I am sliding over to it. I don't know it I have made sense in the way I am explaining it or not but I hope somebody understands why I need more time delay. I have been able to increase the time delay before the side box disappears in the past with other versions of Windows.

Can someone please help me increase the time delay I am talking about??

Thanks so much for any help offered to solve my problem

Jim

When I slide my mouse pointer to the right to make a selection in the box to the right if my mouse pointer goes outside of the blue line then the box to the right disappears before I can get to it to make a selection.

click on this link to see what I am talking about. In the example I have moused on "Newletters" and then want to slide to the right to make a selection in the box to the right.

WOW it's hard to believe that nobody on this forum can help me solve this problem. Kelly Theriot MS MVP (Kellys Korner) helped me fix this for my computer running Win XT before. I think she has faded into the background as I can't seem to find her anymore even though her website is still open.

Help!

Welcome to the Seven Forums. Sorry that you did not get an answer within the desired time frame.

The menu delay setting has not changed since Windows NT.

Try the setting mentioned here:
How to Control the Delay of the Start Menu Display

The delay in making it appear is the same delay used in making it go away. If you are looking for an asymmetrical setting (fast to appear, slow to go away) I cannot help you.

I think the difficulty is if you are not precise in your mouse movements and stray outside either the arrow entry or the dropdown it closes immediately. I have this problem occasionally myself.

....closes immediately....
Increasing the setting mentioned in the link above will delay the closure as well.

The default setting is 400ms - if the setting is increased to the max of 4000ms (4 seconds), then you will most likely get into the habit of clicking on the menu item of interest to get the sub-menu to appear - otherwise, you must hover for 4 seconds before the sub-menu appeares.

You can stray off of the menu item (while on your way to the sub-menu item) and you will have 4 seconds to get back on track or to reach the sub-menu before it closes. But, having a long delay time also allows you to move the mouse diagonally toward sub-menu items vs. a careful horizontal trajectory followed by a vertical one.

:-)

Sorry I didn't answer sooner. I have been out of town. Thank you so much for your help. You gave me exactly the advice I was looking for. The setting was 8 and I set it at 500 so the delay would be a half a second which works perfect for me. I can wait a half a second for the new menu to appear and at the same time a half a second delay works for me when I am moving the mouse over to the new context box, that is along side, in case I stray out of the boundrys then I do not lose the the second context box. This works so much better for me because when I move sideways I almost always stray outside of the boundry and now the context box is still there when I do that.

I really really appreciate being able to fix this and again I say thank you.

You are absolutely correct... But the real problem was my default setting was 8. If my default setting would have been 400 as "UsernameIssues" mentioned in his post I think I might have been ok. I think some bootup speed up tweaking might have changed this setting on my computer...

I am so thankful to have this problem fixed.

Wow, 8; I could see how that could drive you nuts.

Many years ago, I used with a setting of 0. That lasted for less than a day - as I found that the muscles in my arm would tense up every time I knew I had to "stay on course" :-)

Also want to thank all who looked at my problem and who were unable to offer a fix. I know I wasn't explaining the problem very well and that probably didn't help any. Anyway I am so glad to have this problem fixed. I know the problem is pretty trivial but it really gets annoying when it happens time after time...

Thanks again all!!!
