OK, I have just been lumbered with the task of writing a monthly newsletter
for the "Country Womens Association" in our medium sized town.:sarc: Can anybody suggest a free download program that will help me make curved headings and fancy tricks to brighten things up a bit.;)

You're welcome, jvsimo1. Both LibreOffice and OpenOffice have extensive tutorial sections so it may take a while to read through it all. Best of luck, Editor in Chief! :)

What I would say before you start is don't worry too much about sprucing things up too much.

It's best to keep things simple because you'll find that people appreciate layout, spelling and grammar more than fancy multi-coloured wavy headlines.

As your readers include senior citizens they'll appreciate reasonably-sized fonts and good use of white space on the pages.

Generally speaking, headlines look good in Arial Bold whilst the main text will be fine in Times New Roman.

Your newspapers and magazines can often provide clues as to how to lay a page out and liven it up a bit.

Best of luck, I hope it goes well for you.

You apparently do not have Word 2007 or 2010 which would give you many options to fancy things up. But Open Office does have similar facilities - not as fancy though.

If you want to do simple enhancements, you can use Wordpad (which is on your system). There you can insert pictures and drawings (via Paint). This is the easiest "on-board" facility you have.
