I am considering upgrading from Nero 8 to Nero 10.

However, I am not sure that I need any functionality that I don't have with Nero 8 Ultimate...

The one possible exception is Nero Media Home 4... However, in reading it briefly, it doesn't seem like it does a whole lot that isn't available out of the box for Windows 7 Home Premium...

Does anyone use Nero Media Home that can tell me what it does that might be worth buying the upgrade for. Ar ehtere any new features in Nero 10 that should cause me to buy it other than the name change?

Didn't know that Nero 10 was being offered until I saw your post.

So, I went there and looked at it ... and I'm definitely NOT going to upgrade from Nero 9. Why? Because it looks like all they've done us bundled in two other products I don't need to justify the $50+ upgrade price.

I don't need the Video Editing SW (already have another product for that), and also already have another product for Backup/Restore that works just fine (Acronis True Image Home 2010).

What they're doing now is increasing the already "bloated" product that was originally, one of the finest CD/DVD burning packages out there.

Also, I saw yesterday that they're offering a Nero 9 "light" for free. Just basic CD/DVD burning SW -- but that's all I really need for now.

Unless you need the other add-ons, suggest you consider the Nero 9 light.

Nero 10 - Burning Rom as a separate application

Now the good news is that starting with Nero 10, Burning Rom will be available as a separate application for those who are only interested in the burning functionality. While the free version does cover some of the standard use cases, Burning Rom still allows you to do quite a bit more. Unfortunately, however, this option is not yet available for ordering.

Regarding Nero Media Home 4: there's a number of things this app will do for you that are pretty cool, such as streaming TV programs, all the transcoding options etc.

Hi there
I'm still running NERO 7 -- and that ONLY for the ability to create AUDIO CD's from FLAC files.

Nero used to be an absolutely great product until it became totally overloaded with BLOATWARE 99% of the features which won't be used by the average joe in any case.

For multi-media streaming and serving there are zillions of BETTER alternatives too.

Cheers
jimbo

Well, I am running Windows 7 64Bit and I have decided to go for Nero10 – compatible with Windows 7.
So, I am using Burning ROM 10; it works fine writing data CD/DVD but it fails miserably any attempt to create bootable CD/DVD using boot image file.
No error reported while disk is created. When booting, system reports an error: Cannot boot from CD- Code4.
There is nothing wrong with a boot image, since it works with other programs like MagicISO or nLite; I can boot didks burned with other software with no problem.
I tried to contact tech support but instead of trying to reproduce this behavior they asked me for a log file, that does not show any errors! Screen shots? I am booting CD.
Below are excerpts from a chat:
06:27:20 PM [Marco] Please send us a log file of the burn process. Send your e-mail with the log file attached to this e-mail address: [email protected]
06:27:36 PM [Marco] Maybe my colleagues who handle Burning ROM cases can see something in your log file.
06:28:59 PM [John] How can i send a log file that does not report any errors?
Problem is not with writing to a disk, problem is booting using disk created by Nero.
06:30:08 PM [Marco]
I don't know if the log file will be helpful. But it's the only thing that we can check for errors/problems.
06:31:23 PM [John] No errors reported by a burning process. Error while booting is: "cannot boot from cd-error code 4". that is the only error i am getting and boot process stops.
06:33:03 PM [Marco]
I do not know this error message and I doubt that anyone of my colleagues knows it. Please send us the log file and let's hope that there is something "strange" in that log file. That's the onlyx thing I can suggest you in this case.
06:34:13 PM [John] But there is no errors in a log file.
06:36:46 PM [John] Why don’t you try to create a boot cd/dvd with boot image other than Nero and try to boot? You will see this error.
06:37:29 PM [John] I can provide boot image file that works with MagicISO
06:38:18 PM [Marco]
because I have no time to test such things now. Therefore I wantyou to send us the log file, maybe the boot image file too and a short problem description via e-mail.
06:44:18 PM [Marco]
You can contact the technical support department by phone:
Technical Support Hotline USA: (888) 309-4212 ($1.29 per minute)

I am speechless . That is it, no help, it simply does not work as expected, do not get into NERO if you want to create bootable disks.

Nero Media Home - Check out Mezzmo

Mezzmo does a better job than either Nero or the built-in WMP music server. Nero and WMP fail to load MP3 album art with the DLNA connection, at least on my setup.

Mezzmo was the only server software I could find that reliably serves album art.

The only reason I still use Nero is becase of the RMS normalization available for music when burning an audio CD. Always found it much better than SoundForge10's method, which is just overly complicated.

Don't know why anyone uses Nero , it's just over priced bloatware. There are so many other choices for burning , editing and so on that is so much better than Nero. I tried it once, wayyyyyy back, it sucked the life out of my system resources, crash my computer a few times, It didn't even last one day on my computer, I uninstalled it and never looked back and would never recommend it to anyone.
The burning utility built into Windows 7 along with a few other free or LOW COST apps do me just fine.
