Network Connection Is Dial Up Should Be LAN, How To Change?

I was installing some software (dial up.jpg) and noticed my connection is set for dial up (dial up 2), and it should be LAN. Could someone help me change this to what it should be??

when I originally got this computer I was having connection problems, I'd have to delete the connection and then reconnect (I think).

so how do I create a LAN connection?

(network and Sharing,jpg) Do I click that 'Ready To Create'? The Create A Homegroup??

Hello Joe mate first some system specs please http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html as it seems you need some LAN driver for whatever board you have - hence need to know system specs.

If you cannot get the driver using the Windows system what I normally do do is access another machine download the driver for whatever onto a stick and then install the driver from the stick to the machine.

Edit I meant to add I see you have AVG on the machine - a piece of rubbish as far as I am concerned try disabling it or better still use something else.
I would also run these
SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium
AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

OK I think I did the Sys Info? Oh I've already run those A Spyware programs.

My AVG blocked it the first try, I disabled it and ran it all again.

Now the AVG mate I really would get rid of it to be honest if you want a free AV then pick one from here
Free Windows Desktop Software Security List | Gizmo's Freeware < check out the real time listings only not AVG MuckAfee or Comodo (awful nagger) the Bitdefender Avast and MSE are all ok and there are plenty others to try from but those I mentioned I have already tried them on my test machine and found the better onees out.

Of course if you want to go paid for - Kaspersky is the one I use on all my machines and at $0.035 a day just about free

Yes it is a bit of trial and error because Asus in their wisdom make the choosing hard. The driver could even be within that Windows 7 or Windows folder I would look in them both first because they have the latest dates on them. If you download the wrong one it will not install or at least not resolve your issue but one should do it.
Sorry to be a bit vague but if it were in front of me that is what I would do.

Yes Joe because you can see at the top of the attachment the LAN controller is a Realtek one and there would be one on their site but from experience the Realtek site is really quite confusing at times so best just use the Asustek one mate.

If that .exe one does not get the LAN going then open up the Windows or the Win7 folder because as you can see they are more recent than the .exe setup one but try that first.

Joe I just looked into those other folders and in the pics are the ones I would try they are small files but they usually lead one into a wizard set up.

I should have asked too do you have the original software disk that came with the board??

Hhmmm, in my folder that AusSetup is a different file size? Mine's 1089 kb, yours 460 kb. Am I i wrong folder?

do I just click it and see what happens? Do I want the most recent one if I'm looking around at all of them?

no I don't have the disc, this is a custom built machine, by someone else.

Just looked in Lan, Windows 7, and Windows, all have the same AsusSetup.exe file, same size and the same date for all three I can find.

Hmm Joe mate my bad I had a small window and expanding it found the size that you have too

Now I tried the Realtek site itself and guess what no references to that driver - no surprise really because past dealings with their site have ended in hours of frustration.

Now I think the driver you need is the one from the Asus site as in pics and by the by do you still have the software disk that came with the board or even a manual? There is a link in that second pic for Realtek but have not tried it because it is getting very convoluted now.

The other things I could suggest is to try a new Ethernet cable (does the small light come on when you plug the cable in or is there a small - usually - a green LED) or go wifi - I know that you prefer LAN as I do but sometimes one has to compromise and as long as your modem is properly secured it should not be a problem.

I shall ait to hear from you because the other way to look for a driver is an aftermarket software I sometimes use but only when I have a problem that I cannot find my way around.

One more option would be a PCI card for the LAN see pic

No software disc or manual, this is a custom built setup and I never got those,

I have wifi, but don't I need to setup a connection in the Network and Sharing Center, to crate a LAN connection?

Well yes you do but perhaps I have got this wrong but at my place (I am at work right now) I just connect my machines to the modem -- I have never had to make a set up like that?? When I installed the OS on my machines I had the choice of making the connection then I chose Public because it affords me more security unless I have it terribly wrong.

What I thought was that you needed a driver for the Ethernet port on your machine as I was under the impression that the port was not working?? So are there lights lit on that port as I ascribed to?

Yes I have a small green light right next/under to the ethernet cable on the rear, than above the cable is a blinking orange light.

I had a friend help me set up this machine, but I'm the one who set up the connection and I don't really know much about it. I went from Win XP to Win 7.

I remember I had to keep deleting the connection and setting up a new one each time. Somewhere I set up the dial up and there it's stayed, until now.

OK just called my internet provider and hey walked me thru deleting that dial up connection, so looks like I'm all set with a LAN connection!
