Network Controller, Exclamation Mark in Device Manager

Carry'ed this over from the Dell Forums due to inactivity, hope that's okay?

This was a clean install of windows 7 HPremium Retail Image, clean and known to be very good. All Updates have been accepted. I'm wondering if I should have allowed all MS Drivers to install before installing these Wireless Drivers, etc., maybe they would have come through from Windows 7 Included drivers?

Network Controller Driver Missing and no Wireless. I've Installed these drivers from the Dell Site so far but Wireless still don't work? Ethernet does work, along with all other drivers, seem to be installed from my Retail Image of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I'm wondering if they were installed in the wrong order, although, seems as though the Driver Installer usually tells me this? It does state at the Dell Driver Info page that they need to be installed in the proper order. This is the order they were installed in, and even did a Repar Re-Install of the Atheros Wireless 1702 WLAN, R305632.exe twice. I've checked the HDD for SMART Attributes and overheating, besides that this pc seems to be fine.

This is the one having issues with, or did not install in proper order?

Hi,
R305773 from dell does contain exact match with your network hardware ID.
http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R305773.exe

If direct installation failed, ignore it and proceed with this steps
(Note: previous installation will create a folder C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R305773 which we will need later)

1. Open device manager (Click start, on the search box type DEVMGMT.MSC and press enter).
2. Right click on network adapter and select update driver.
3. Click Browse my computer for driver software.
3. Click "lick Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".
4. Uncheck "Show compatible driver" box.
5. Click have disk and point to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R305773\win7\ndis6xWin7
6. Then select netathrx.inf (Use netathr.inf if you are using 32-bit Windows 7).
7. Proceed with installation until finish.

Notes:
You wireless, Dell Wireless 1702 WLAN actual card model is Atheros AR5B5
The original driver which is R305632.exe does not contain inf file so you can't install it manually.

Thanks alot blackx, I'll try this when I get back to her house! I did try something similar but not with the detail you have. I was able to figure out the Wireless Card as Atheros AR5B5, so thanks for confirming I was correct. I'll post back my results.

You can also use the VEN-DEV method to find which are the correct drivers for your specific wireless adapter, and where to find them. I have explained it here:

You have already found the information you need for using the VEN-DEV method:

-Atheros Wireless 1702 WLAN, R305632.exe Hardware ID:
PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002B&SUBSYS_02051028&REV_01

Here, the VEN (vendor) number is 168C, and the DEV (device) number is 002B. Go to http://pcidatabase.com and do a Device search on 002B. Then, on the next screen, look for the entry which shows 168C as the vendor. There are four such listings, and all four show Atheros Communications. I'm guessing that one of these four will be the driver that you need.

Thanks mrjimphelps, but have already done that multiple times. Must have something to do with the Installation or another piece of software that Dell uses in their OEM Recovery that I did not use. I will try blackx's suggestion next.

TRY THIS METHOD, and i found it works PERFECTLY on my pc!
- UNINSTALL ALL drivers and this includes ur graphic drivers or any others installed or any PRE-INSTALLED drivers that reside on ur pc!
- REINSTATE it all back with ur PC RESOURCE CD! see whether it works or not.
- IF PROBLEM STILL ARISE, my suggestions was GO TO MAJORGEEKS.com -download TWEAKING.com WINDOWS REPAIR. and perform FULL REPAIR. vice versa. (mean u need to UNINSTALL ALL it again and perform FULL REPAIR along with SFC /scannow and CHKDSK). i presume ur problems will be solved now!. adious smart!
