Network discovery for dummies

I am having issues.

With Windows - does the network discovery option automatically work?

I just noted that if I do share - then all the computers in the house can locate some documents.

Is it safer to disable this option?

I have noted with Sony Viao that passwords can be difficult - so none of my computers have passwords for that reason.

Passwords can be difficult? Not sure what that means. Difficult how?

Is there a reason you are sharing folders and files? If not then I would suggest not doing that.

Network Discovery has to be enabled so the PC is visible on the network or if using Homegroup instead. You can choose what you want to share from each of the other computers.

Network sharing - discovery

I am just wondering - how do you turn off sharing.

I do not know how to do it. I also do not wish to loose any information.

I am so sorry to ask silly questions.

I do not wish to share anymore or know what the default is.

Go to the Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings and click (Tick) each item you wan to turn off sharing for.

To share a file/folder open it Properties/Sharing tab and click the Share button and follow the prompts.
