Network Win 7 to XP

Hi,
Have tried a search before posting but can't find a situation the same as mine.

I have a Win 7 laptop (Home Premium 64) and a Desktop running XP Home SP2.

I have the win 7 machine as a Work network on the same workgroup as the Desktop (Workgroup)

The XP machine can see the win7 machine on the network and workgroup and access the shared directories and files fine

The win 7 machine shows the Desktop in the Network screen, but when trying to access it I get Windows cannot access \\Desktop.

When I try and ping either the machine name or IP address of the XP machine from the Win 7 machine I get Request Timed Out on all 4 packets.

I have LLTD installed on the XP machine.

All network settings are set up as recommended on the Win 7 machine (Network discovery on, File & Printer Sharing on, Public folder sharing on, Password protect sharing off, Same results whether 128 or 40/56 bit encryption selected)

Win 7 machine is running Norton but the network settings are correct and both machines in the trusted zone, and visible to the firewall

Win XP machine is running McAfee, but again both machines are in the trusted zone and are visible on the network map.

Anyone got any ideas/help on this as it's driving me round the bend!!

There are no guarantee's here because of the two different A/V's you are running which tend to cause problems with sharing, even if they are in the trusted zone it's not a sure thing.

There is a registry adjustment which needs to be done on the Windows 7 machine. To open up the registry type regedit into your command prompt then hit enter.

Navigate to the following key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
set the value to: 1

You may need to create the 32-bit DWORD and name it LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy setting the value of the key to 1 for this to work.

Other than that either of your A/V's can cause these types of problems to occur in which case you can try to configure them to allow sharing, sometimes you will need to uninstall them completely.

Thanks for the tip on the AV - when I disable the FW on the XP machine the 7 machine picks it up and I can access it fine.

I'll try and swap the 7 machine over to McAfee and see if that helps as I hate Norton anyway!

Sounds good Cepheus, it's really hard to tell which A/V is causing the problems these days but it's usually one or the other. Hope you get it all sorted out.

Looks like it's McAfee thats being the PITA.

Now both machines have McAfee and network is set up in there, I can only see both machines in the network if I disable the FW lol

I'll get onto McAfee support to see what they can advise!

Yes McAfee is already famous for these types of problems around here, although Norton is a close second LOL.

I'm sure there is a way to configure them for sharing but I'm not famior with either of them because I don't use a real time A/V's as they seem to cause more problems than they solve for the time being.

At least you now know where the actual problem is.
