Please help. I have a win 7 laptop and dell xp desktop. Trying to file and print share over a wireless LAN. firewall and ports enabled for sharing on the pc and laptop I can can view each other by pinging or the net view command but when i try to open them from the windows workgroup share it says network path cannot be found.

Please help tearing my hair out over this one. I have swiched off tcp ip v6 on the laptop does XP use this protocol if so how do I install it again? also enabled TCP IP over net bios on both.

All AV programs switched off to test.

The printer is on the XP Desktop. I'm trying to send print jobs over the wireless lan from the 7 laptop through the XP machine to the printer.

If the machines can ping one another and you have correct created the shares, it should work.

See if this tut can help. Wireless or LAN, the concept is the same.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/53830-file-sharing-between-xp-w7-vice-versa.html

Thanks for the tutorial I tried to directly map via IP but nothing happens when trying to link to a xp printer or xp shared folder from the 7 laptop.

I keep getting an error network path cannot be found yet all can ping each other in bios and the two devices ips can be seen when viewing the attached devices on the router. My router is NETGEAR WNR2000.

So the machines can ping one another, but you can't still map drives?

Did you setup the shars exactly like in the tut?

Hi

Well I have had some success...... I uninstalled AVAST 4.8 and the laptop and desktop could file share and print. Via the network link I set up both as Homegroup and it worked! :D

Bad news..... when I installed AVAST 5.0 back on it blocks the ports and you cannot access the files or printer. Even the same with AVG 9.0 free, this still happens with both AV applications even if they are disabled the only way to get the pcs to communicate was to remove the AV completely which I cannot do as the desktop unprotected.

The free versions of these programs don't seem to have port or networking override facilities in them Can anyone help?? Thanks very much.

I don't use AVAST, rather AVG. That is another free AV sw should you wish to go down that path. Perhaps some over in Security section can help.

I installed MS Security Essentials and that permits the ports and file and network security. So all now works thankfully. Has anyone else had this problem?
