New build BSOD 0x0000124 Blue screen crash - DM log uploaded!

PSU installed and so far so good. According to speccy the CPU temp is around 64 - 72, dropping occaisionally to 54 - tho it just spiked to 82 - so I think some attention to the cooler is needed as you suggest! I will get a new one and also use thermal paste!

Just waiting to see if it crashes again.... Not installed the graphics card yet, until things seem a bit better. When I do putthe 450 backin I take it iI just re-install all the Nviidia drivers?

thanks again for all your support on this - it's been fantastic and would've been totally lost otherwise!

Well so far so good - seems to be sorted! Ran fine all alst night and today. Will have a good at re-installing the graphics card.

One toher thing - I want to formatt he XP drive once I've got all the data and re-use it as for data storrage. Are there any good tools for this or is it ok just to use the windows facility?

Thanks again for all your help!

Yes, when you get ready let me know. I can tell you how to get it absolutely clean although it will take some time. But, when finished the will be absolutely nothing on the drive. Then we can set up and format a new partition or a couple of partitions, however you want. It's pretty easy and I do mine that way. Just in case you have any nasties on there, they will not survive.

Well it was all going well.....! Had a power cut this morning and shortly after the power came back on and I rebooted the pc it bluescreen crashed again.... Not doing it as frequently but done it twice in the past half hour....

Might try installing the card as not had a chance yet to see if it's still graphic related. Not sure what else could be behind it as the new PSU seemed sweet! BIOS CPU temps were not high on this reboot. Speecy is still reporting around 40 at the moment. Whats gives!!

Upload the new logs Paul, and don't fit the GPU while there are still problems as it just adds more parts to the equation.

It looks like I'm back to square one! whereas it was only crashing periodically yesterday it's crashing shortly after booting now - and that was from cold overnight. Will test in safe mode but I think it's exactly the same as it was!

Getting a new cooler today as not been able to up until today - am I to scrape off the thermal pad and use paste as a better option? cheers Paul

Use High quality alcohol to get the old paste off and use a lint free rag. I use coffee filters. They are completely lint free. Get all the paste off and don't even touch it. Even a hair or oils from your hand can make a difference. You want an absolutely clean surface and full contact with the heatsink and CPU. This is an example. Place a small dan of paste on the CPU between the size of a bb and the size of a small pea. When you look at it and think, that's not enough, it's the right amount. Let the heatsink spread the paste. Tighten it down slowly in an X pattern You are trying to tighten it down so it goes down evenly. This may help.

Man -this is so annoying!! Thanks for the info guys - new cooler installed as per above (great guide!) at I was looking at CPU temps of 32 when it crashed! Just crashed again in safe mode - exactly as before within about 30 secs of booting!!

I had a day of it being absolutely fine, then a power cut (which might have nothing to do with it), after which it crashes and they had gradually increased in frequency until it now does it about as soon as the desk-top loads!! And this is after the pc is completely cold! Anything else I can test?

Paul, please do me a favor. I'm old and memory fails somewhat and I'm involved in numerous threads like this. Would you be kind enough to tell me everything you have done, what tests were run and any faults on the tests. Would you also run http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/96879-blue-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html again and post the zip results here so I can see if there are any changes. Also, did you put your graphics card back in and what other hardware changes have you made?

Also, you list a custom build, did you build it yourself? When you installed the motherboard were there any standoffs that were in there but didn't line up with any holes in the motherboard?? Does your board have a start reset button on it? Are you ready to get your hands dirty? That's about all the questions I can think of right now.

Thanks - the problem I have at the moment is that he pc is not staying on long enough to run the logger!! I did build the pc myself and looking at the board there are potentially a few stand-offs missing. Could this be an issue? I (don't have any spare stand-offs handy but I could take the board out and make sure it's not grounding on the case easy enough - tried everything else!!

The board is an Asus p7h55-m and I'm not sure about start / reset - I think the case has that on the power switch - is that what you meant?

No further changes to hardware, I havn't installed the graphics card yet. I wondered if it might help tho if this is a problem relating to graphics drivers, but then it crashes in safe mode so that might indicate it's not driver related? So frustrating as I'd thought I had it licked and then I'm back to square one!

Paul, I'm sorry but I can't open the file. But would you check the 24 pin connection pretty closely and male sure the plug is fully seated. There should be no gap between the plug and the receptical. Also for your 4 pin plug., above and to the left of the CPU. Also please make sure you plugged in the CPU Power plug into It not a PCIe pluh.

crashed again but will have a good look over the board tomorrow - probably take it all apart and reassemble to see if anything is a miss. It's longer intervals before it crashes at the moment and the CPU tempos seem a lot lower (in the 30s) , but that doesn't appear to be the culprit!

Update - pulled the motherboard, cleaned everything up, made sure all the stand offs were in place (even put insulating tape on the chassis under the board to make sure of no contacts there) tidied up the wiring and made sure all the power connections were seated correctly. Made no difference. Barely loaded the desktop and crashed.....

What I can't understand is how it all works fine using XP and the old drive? No crashes. Same hardware, but no issues. Only obvious difference that I can see is the new drive. Is there a better way to check the Windows 7 drive (did the windows test 3 times and it passed for bad sectors etc). Thinking of a programme like the one suggested to test for memory?

thanks guys
