Restart it, When you get to the select your language, don't do it. Hold down shift and Press F10. You will get a command prompt. type diskpart and press enter, and wait for the window to reply diskpart. Type list disk and press enter, you should only have one disk, disk 0, if it shows the DVD you should be able to determine the disk # diskpart assigned it,but it should be disk 0, so type select disk 0 and oress enter (#0 not the letter) it will say, disk 0 is the selected disk. Type clean all and press enter. Then go have lunch, assuming you computer does not crash it will be several hours to finish. When finished it will say diskpart cleaned the selected disk. Type create partition primary and press enter, it will say partition created, type format fs=ntfs quick and press enter, it will tell you it formatted the disk. type active and press enter. it will reply it marked the partition active. Type exit and press enter. type active and press enter gain and you will be back at the select your language screen, the continue with the install, the disk is completely clean. Nothing survived. If your computer made it that far, you should have no trouble installing. Anything you don't understand, just ask.

thanks - I got as far as the disk part prompt and 0 and it blue screened!

I think this has got to be down to the motherboard, there's nothing else I can think of. I can't explain why XP works on it and why 7 doesn't, but everything else has been ruled out.

Yes it found the drive and listed it as drive 0. I was just about to confirm when it crashed

Try downloading peppermint Linux live DVD, it runs in ram and you don't even need a hard drive connected see if it runs OK. 1. Download and Install | Peppermint | The Linux Desktop OS It should be an ISO image and can be burned to a CD if lees than 700MB otherwise a dvd.

EDIT: I believe the 64 bit version is 576 MB. so a CD

Paul, you have apparently had this rig for some time, am I correct? if so, what ram have you been using up until recently?

I have been using the unbranded 2x2gb sticks for a few years now. I added the other two sticks from my sons pc about year ago. they were all installed on the m/b but only half was being used by XP.

It does sound like the m/b is the most likely possibility to me but I don't understand how XP runs fine on it

I've tried different combinations of the sticks and it still seemed to crash regardless. Even when just using the one stick as you suggested just now unfortunately

Paul just a reminder.

When you install ram please only install it in the slots according to the motherboard manual. It will vary on how many ram modules you are installing.

Do you have a copy of the motherboard manual??

Paul, please look at all the sticks of ram you have and tell me what they say on the stickers on the side. It should give you the type (DDR2, DDR3) the frequency, the timings and the voltage. also, do you have a case speaker on the board? When it posts do you hear a beep? If you do, remove all the ram and start the computer with no ram in it. It will not start, but if you have a speaker, you should hear a long sequence of beeps. That will at least tell us the board is doing what it should do.

There is a tiny speaker that's sit in the same place as the reset/power pins for the case. I will reattach this and start up and record the beeps with no ram. At the moment the m/b is still sitting on top of it's box out of the case!

Right - ram: I have 4 sticks in total (2gbs a stick)

2 new two are Exilir: 2gb1rx8 PC3-10600u-9-10-b0. 1333 with 8 modules

The older ram is unbranded - the sticker just tells me it 2048mb ddr3-1333 CL9. 8 modules also.

Ok - wouldn't boot without any ram. Board powered up and I could hear a faint beeee beep beep, beeee beep beep coming from the speaker module.

OK, Great. That means the motherboard is doing as it should. I do not believe it is the motherboard as it will run XP. If the board will run 1 OS, it should run any OS. Put the 2 older sticks back in in 2 of the same color slots. Your manual says any 2 slots but the same color for dual channel, which is what you want. Unplug the power and wait for the capacitors to drain. You will notice the LEDs go off. There is a small silver CMOS battery on the motherboard that is simple to remove. Notice the orientation of it. Remove it from the board and leave it out for 20 minutes or so. Then replace it in the same orientation it is now. This will completely reset your bios. It will 'forget' everything in it, including the date and time as well as how it is set up. Remember what sata mode your bios is in now. When it first boots up, enter bios straight away, and set optimized defaults and confirm it. Check your sata mode and make sure it is set to what it is now, then set your boot order, DVD first and hard drive second. Put the Memtest86+ CD in the drive. if you know hat your ram timings are, set the by what the sticks say as well as the dram voltage. If you don't know, leave that alone. Save and exit, memtest86+ should start. If you don't have it or don't remember, I'll post the instructions here for you. Also, please notice when you run memtest, it will tell you how much ram it detects, the frequency, timings and voltages, as well as your CPU frequency. Please remember or write that down and let me know what it says.

Please download from this site http://www.memtest.org/ in the middle of the page are the Download links, you can download the ISO.zip or the Auto USB Flash Drive installer.zip

Extract the Zip file. If you chose the ISO image, burn it to a CD using Windows Disk Image Burner or any Image burner you mat have. If you downloaded the Auto USB installer, extract it, insert your USB 2.0 Flash Drive and take note of the drive letter. Run the installer, select the Flash Drive Letter, check the format box and press next. It will install memtest86+ to a flash drive. You can use either V4.20 or V5.01. Boot from your selected media. If you use V5.01 it will tell you to press certain buttons at the start, please press no buttons. The test will begin on it's own and continue to run until you stop it. It needs to run for 8 complete passes or until you receive an error. If you receive an error, stop the test. Even 1 error is a fail. Each pass tests a different part of the ram and each of the 10 tests in each pass tests something different. It takes a minimum of 8 passes to completely test the ram, more passes are better. It is quite a long test and will take several hours depending on how much ram you have. Due to the time length it is best to run overnight. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask​

Thanks will do. Im been mulling over if is the mother board or not and also if the bios settings need to be different for 7 to xp. I ran the mem86 test before so just checking that you want me run it again? cheers
