New build - Need recommendations for SSD

Hey peeps,

Hows we doing then??

First off, I am not really on and off the forums at the mo as I had a major accident with my current PC which resulted with being bricked.

Sorry S2E, you were a very good board with no problems, did not ever have a problem with the BIOS, but alas you are gone.

Soooo..... Time to finally upgrade.

What's going in there then,

Intel Core i7 980x
EVGA Classified 3
6GB of OCZ Reaper -x ram (Being transplanted from current build.
1200w PSU (Being transplanted)
750GB WD Caviar Black (Being transplanted)

Now I just have one big issue, SSD.

I have been looking at the Intel lot as they seem to be the best at the mo, but I want to know what is second best, i know i sound like i am trying to cut corners but i can't afford a their X-25m 160GB on top of the lot above.


Could someone please be sweet and give me some recommendation's.

Obviously the PC is used GAMING, but its also used for surfing, listening to music and watching videos/movies.

There will be a Water Cooling kit going in either this month or next so until then there is no overclocking as i will be using the Stock cooler. Again not wasting money there on something that is going to have maybe 1 months use.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Ok, as an update, i think the SSD from Crucial looks good.

This article compares several. Of course the top dog is the Crucial 256GB version by far at double the price of the 128GB.

The main competitor in speed etc. to the Crucial 128 is the OCZ Vertex 2. It is available on this side of the pond in a 90GB up to about 120GB versions.

The article is a good read and comparison guide.

I love my Crucial Real SSD. I understand that these in raid are staggering but my budget is blown so I'll just have to dream the dream.

There seems to be quite a bit to read through so i may just hold on a little longer actually.

Just means my HDD's might be a slight bottleneck for the time being but hey better to do more research before jumping in the way i was about too.

The only real competition to the one you were thinking about is the Vertex 2.
So it comes down to price as much as anything.

They have had the 90GB 3.5" Vertex 2 on sale on this side of the pond for as little as $170 the last couple of weeks.

Well here is the update, i wont be having that spec above.

Money kinda fell-through so instead i will be having a

Asus Rampage iii Extreme
i7 950

Bit of a difference but when i started looking at benchmarks for that CPU, the 950, it turned out the 980x was not much better as far as FPS goes.

So the 950 is coming tomorrow and the board comes Saturday.

I will update you all when i have put it together.

This is very true.

Yes it would be nice to have the latest and greatest, but, like you said, it has most of the performnce and after looking at some comparison benchie charts (Games mind), the 980x on stocl was not much better anyway, think 2 - 4 fps.

And after this, i dont think i have paid over the £300 mark, even my Quad 9300 only cost £250.

Exactly always interesting to see before during and after and with a steady hand, close up camera settings and good lighting you can use these shot for all sorts of reference without opening up the system.
1) Close up of CPU without cooler, will clearly show sn and other mfg. info when and if needed later.
2) Sata and internal routing, gives good idea's later for cleaning up wire routing for rarely does the perfect routing occur on first try!
3) Mobo close up and overview, again gives an idea of headers used/open, fan headers open/used and other settings.
4) Close ups of drives and behind mobo wiring, again for ideas on where things are routed to.
5) Gets your complete computer geek on ! lol
