New build - your advice appreciated

OK guys, I am about to order my parts but I have one final dilemma.

I am now going for the crosshair IV formula (890FX chipset) m/board as it is now cheaper than the crosshair III. BUT, I have a choice of this:

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Six-core Processor - 2.80 GHz, 9MB Cache, Socket AM3, 125W, 45 nm, 3 Year Warranty, Retail Boxed

or this

AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.40 Ghz 8MB Cache Quad-core Processor - Black Edition

for the same price

Which is the best option processor ?

Which is better really depends upon what you are going to do with the machine. If you use software that will take good advantage of more cores...then the 6 core. But for games and such, which usually only utilize 2 or even 1 processor core...the faster speed will be better.

The quad core 3.4 BE has huge OC potential if this could be in your future? It's the very chip that I'm looking to upgrade to. The six core I'm sure has many pro's as well. You are talking in the 165-169 usd area correct?

Totally understand. I'm at a loss (rare) I like the 3.4be but I'm not sure in what situations the six cores could be helpful or faster if any. Possibly extreme multitasking but I could be off mark. Maybe others will way in with their own personal experience.

In the FWIW department, just something to consider. I have the 1055T, I am also running 16GB ram and the msi 890GXM board. I do not need most of what I have, however, with as fast as technology is changing you should make that a consideration. I will be able to take advantage of the new technology and do it in stride. Others will have to upgrade or even build new machines. That is why I made some of the choices I made. I have not been able to do anything to make this machine even slow down - and I have tried. I think that should go into any new build. even if you spend more than planned, prepare for the future because the future is changing quite rapidly right now.

With a few of those things in mind and what you are wanting to do right now, take a look at the MSI 890 FXA I believe it is.it has 6X SATA6, 2Xesata the SB890 chipset and will run any of the processors you want, plus a couple of SSD's GEN3 if you choose to do that. It is set up for whatever you want to do right now as well as anything the future may bring. It also has very good expandability. No matter what you choose, think about the ramifications and above all -GET WHAT YOU WILL BE HAPPY WITH. That is the most important consideration. It will be a good build if when you are through you can stand back and be proud of your decisions.

Well my enthusiasm took over from the mind and I ended up ordering the Phenom II X 6 1090T 3.2 GHz. Thought I'd have the best of both worlds.

And I went for 2 Saphire HD5770 Vapour X in crossfire.

Cant wait to see how she performs.

If I were you and I was going to switch to AMD, That is the same choice I would make. I have the 1055T and am very happy with it. With it and my ram Nothing will slow it down. But, if I were building this machine again, I would go with the 1090BE. Take plenty of pictures and let us keep up with how it is going.

linnemeyerhere, it will scream. According to some of the reviews I have seen overclocked nothing except the $1000 intel can keep up with it. But the 980X will walk all over it. For $1000 I guess it should!

Yeah, but for me, that would be like driving a Ferrari in traffic to the store. I'd never get it out of 2nd gear, lol. A Guy
