New Catalyst driver messed up my graphics card...

I was having some problems with Windows 7 the first day after installation (such as the taskbar disappearing and having a black & white, rolling picture on the S-video port), and other forums told me to update my video card driver.

I installed the new ATI catalyst control center, and it wasn't working right, so I rebooted my system. When it came back up, it showed the mobo's logo and the boot screen fine, but when it got to the logon screen, my screen looked like this:
screen2.jpg

I ended up having to take out the graphics card and use the onboard VGA port to hook up an old monitor and do a system restore before it would work right again. And it still has the taskbar problem! help!

Would help to know what driver version you installed (link?).

Also looking at your specs everything in it is so out of date, that all things considering it would be better to stay with XP until such a time as you have a computer more suited to Windows 7.

Welcome to seven forums DrPeelz: Like stormy13 says about your system I agree. Also your system hopefully is only tryin to run the 32 bit version of seven. And hasn't been supported since Xp He;s right we'll need the driver you have used.ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support- and should make sure you have the latest bios. Other than that You should check out this thread on installing AGP drivers. I went through it last night and I fairly sure thier is a few posts using your card. You'll have to check the posters soecs to find it but maybe you can find some help in the thread. http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/35299-install-agp-drivers-hd-3850-3650-2400-pro.html Good Luck with it. Fabe

Well it'll be a while before I can afford a new computer since I just spent $119.99 on windows 7. About the AGP Driver thread, I fail to see how a thread for radeon HD cards will help with installing a 9600. Also it will be very difficult to roll back to XP since my system can't boot from CDs or floppy disks

I see that you have a fairly old system with a Via KM400A chipset. Have you gotten a Hyperion Pro package that supports it? The latest one I see:

http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/VIA_HyperionPro_V524A.zip

claims to support Vista, so it'll probably work under Win7.

I suppose that Win7 or Windows Update may have supplied all of the drivers that you need, but I doubt that.

Hope this helps.
