New computer with Windows 7 won't work anymore

I've only had my new computer with Windows 7 for just over a week and it won't work anymore. It goes into Startup Repair and says it can't repair this computer automatically. I press "Finish" and then it just restarts again showing the logo of the motherboard on screen and then goes back into Startup Repair again.

I called the shop where I bought it and they said it is possible I was loading too much software on too quickly. It is a computer I use for business so I wasn't loading any rubbish on and I didn't install that much - Office suite, antivirus, modem software, printer driver.

Is this something that could have cause it or are they just putting the blame on me? Also, if anyone knows what this problem is any help would be appreciated.

I would hope it still under warranty. Take it back.

For a start, that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You can't install stuff 'too quickly' on a computer, they don't need a breather every few minutes! Clearly the person you spoke to hasn't got a clue or he's trying to bull**** you.

I agree with huffman, it's under warranty (even if the shop claims it isn't, all the parts inside will still be under manufacturer warranties) so take the thing back and don't take no for an answer!

One possible solution to maybe get some use out of it while you're sorting all this out, is to boot up the PC with your Windows installation disc in your DVD drive (providing you got one with the PC, which, by the way you're 100% entitled to) and attempt to reinstall windows after reformatting your main drive/partition. It sounds like your Windows installation is corrupted. Or then again it could be a dud hard drive, in which case there's not a lot you can do until the people you bought it off agree to take it back and give you a new computer.

Thank you for your replies. I thought it sounded strange that I installed software on too quickly. He said I should install a program, wait one week, and then install another. I thought this is crazy! I need this computer for work and I don't think Windows 7 is that precious that I have to give it time to adapt.

I am not an IT expert so I won't try to boot it with the installation disk just yet, plus it is still under warranty. I will be taking it down to the shop.

Thank you again and if anyone else has ideas they will be greatly appreciated. :D

Hi Mars3000,

The issue which you have mentioned is a software issue which no computer manufacturer will take care, if you haven't taken any software contract with them. The basis warranty only covers any hardware malfunctionality in the computer, which is called OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

Here is the way, you can fix the issue:

(1) Restart the computer and then keep tapping F8 key on your computer keyboard until you get the "Advance Boot Menu" options.

(2) Click on LKGC (Last Known Good Configuration), if its available under options. If it does not fix, then restart the computer and keep tapping F8. This time choose "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". It would open up a large window, looks like the command prompt.

(3) Type rstrui.exe and hit enter. It would open up the system restore window. Try to choose as early date as possible, when it worked fine (last 7 days) and then follow the onscreen instructions.

If you need any further assistance, feel free to post your queries...............

There's no definitive proof that it is a software issue. Either way, when you buy an OEM system, they are warrantying the software as well, as long as it is their image. If you wipe it out and do a clean install, you may be on your own for software issues. That being said, there could also be an issue with the hard drive, or even the mobo or memory.

Either way, it's a week old, so I'd take it back. I'd demand a refund, and then spend my money elsewhere on a reputable brand from a reputable retailer who actually knows a little bit about the products they sell.

Perhaps the person meant that if you install a number of software packages on a PC in a short space of time, it could make it hard to identify which application is causing trouble.

That still seems pretty silly. If you can't boot into Windows, that suggests a corrupt OS, incompatible drivers, or a hardware fault.

Regardless, the vendor is evading responsibility.

The retailer will have a returns policy. In addition the computer manufacturer offers a year's warranty with full product or parts replacement and tech support.

That said if you want to learn more about your computer you can work through these troubleshooting steps leading up to full Factory Recovery run from it's partition or a clean reinstall of just the OS.

That would take years :roflmao: They should put him in the sales department

Thanks everyone. You've all been very helpful. Now I have something to through back it them when I take it to the shop. We'll see what happens. :)

It is a good idea to space your programs and even Windows Updates installs out so that you can determine with certainty if one has affected performance. You can then roll back using the Restore Point set during installs/updates and give the program/updates greater scrutiny when installing or leave it out.

With Updates you can install from the suspect group singly to determine which is the problem then open an email Support case with MS.

Often times a new computer will have its performance throttled by all of the preinstalled crapware and useless utilties which have better versions built into Win7. It's also a good idea to Clean up factory bloatware

I took the computer back to the shop today and I have just been told the RAM was faulty. They said they fixed the problem and it is ready for pickup. I'll see what it is like when I bring it home.

There was definitely a recognisable difference in attitude from when I talked to them over the phone versus face-to-face.

This has definitely been an education and I thank you all for your input. It is greatly appreciated and I wish you all the best. ;) :D
