Solved New Hard Drive Not Recognized During Boot-Up or Windows 7 Installation

I think we need to get that new WD HD back to looking raw like out of the package. NO partitions or formatting. Make a Partition Wizard CD or run Partition Wizard from the other computer to wipe it clean.

:ar: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93322-partition-wizard-use-bootable-cd.html?ltr=P

There were no partitions or formatting, I used the "Delete" option, not formatting or anything else. It is completely raw. it has exact space as it is supposed to.

Will the jumper work?

Hi

There is no jumper configuration seems to be printed on the label. But the jumper settings are pretty common for all WD disks. Please short pin 5 and 6 using the jumper (OPT 1 Enabled ).

I just found this:

Cause:

Our SATA II hard drives use autospeed negotiation. This enables our SATA II drives to automatically detect the motherboard data transfer rate, making it backward compatible with SATA I data transfer rates. However, some older SATA I controllers are unable to support autospeed negotiation and cannot recognize the drive. This “drive not detected” condition occurs when a chipset is incapable of correctly negotiating the data transfer speed with a SATA II hard drive.

Solution:

  • You can purchase and install a third party PCI or PCI-Express Second Generation Serial ATA controller card for your Serial ATA hard drive(s).
  • To lock the drive at 150 MB/s data transfer rate install a jumper shunt on pins 5-6 (OPT1), shown in the picture below. (Only available on 3.5 inch (Desktop) size drives)
  • If the OPT1 jumper setting does not resolve the issue, please Contact Us for additional assistance.
OPT1 Enabled:

There is another issue. WD5000AZLX is actually a SATA 3 drive ( 6gb/s ). Probably it won't support work in SATA 1 mode. Shorting jumper will cause it to work on SATA 2 mode but not SATA 1.

Most probably not. There are also additional issues as well. This "Chipset" is not supported in "Windows 7". You can install "Win 7" but on board VGA controller won't be supported. It means you might not be able to set native resolution on LCD monitor. Also the lack of video driver will cause issues when playing videos. Buying an IDE HDD is not a good idea when considering the age of this MoBo.

Have you tried the jumper ?.

I am trying jumper right now, the BIOS doesn't tell you if there are Hard Drives read. Therefore, I use the Windows Install to tell me if it reads the Hard Drive.

Most of the PCI SATA cards operates in SATA 1 mode. Only PCI-Express ones seems to support SATA 2/3. Additionally, not al BIOS supports booting from PCI SATA cards. New CPU+MoBO+RAM will be the best choice.

Indeed it is the best choice, however until I save up some more money, I am going to use a WD 250GB IDE Hard Drive I have and do my work off of that until I can get some really good stuff to run my server.

Haha, modern and updated technology is normally always better. However, I am limited right now and this is just a learning experience for me until I really get a good grasp on hosting, then I will put a lot of money into it.

I followed Doc's lead and found:
Internal SATA 6.0 Gb/s drives are not detected by some motherboards

Doc's link referenced SATA 3.0 Gb/s drives, the one above references SATA 6.0 Gb/s drives.

The only real differences between what Doc posted and this post that I see are
SATA 3.0 Gb/s jumper OPT1 enabled = 1.5 Gb/s
SATA 6.0 Gb/s jumper PHY enabled = 3.0 Gb/s
both short pins 5 & 6

The contact us reference is more specific to WDspeed utility in the SATA 6.0 Gb/s reference.

WDC KB said:
Solution:
There are several possible solutions to this issue:
  • Use the WDspeed utility to set the drive to 3.0Gb/s. Please Contact Us to get a copy of WDspeed.

  • Install a jumper on pins 5 & 6. This will limit the negotiation speed to 3.0 Gb/s.

  • Install a third-party add-on card that is not using any of the affected Intel® chipsets listed above. At this time, WD is actively working on enhancements to the speed negotiation protocol to allow the use of 6.0 Gb/s WD hard drives to operate with the above Intel® Chipsets. If an update is released, we will include it in this article as well as in the downloads section on the WD support site. If you wish to be contacted about any updates related to this issue, please subscribe to this article.

It might not make any difference, but I would contact WD and see what they can tell you. The WDspeed utility might be a red herring or it might be just what you need.

There is a special purpose for each jumper settings. Some of them like the speed limiting settings are specifically there for to use by the end user.

In my line of work, i had to deal with lot of old Motherboards which are only compatible with SATA 1 drives. That is why i suggested to looking for possible compatibility issues in the first place.
