New HDD no access on network

Alright here is the issue. I have this machine and an XP machine on my network. The XP machine has the link layer hotfix installed for SP3. Both machines are fully updated.

Now I had a couple of hard drives shared and the XP machine had access to them without any issues at all. I needed more space on the music drive which was an external USB drive. I bought a Western Digital 500Gb internal sata drive and installed it. I moved the music to the new drive and shared the drive the same as the other drives were shared.

This is where it gets weird. The new drive shows up as a network location on the XP machine however it cannot be accessed. I get an error saying I need to make sure I have proper privileges. I do have them because the drive has full access for everyone assigned to it in permissions. The XP machine can still access the other drive I have shared with all my videos on it. So the problem is only with the new drive and all of the settings check out.

Anyone else have this kind of problem?

on the XP computer, enable simple file sharing, then right-click on the drive and go to "sharing and security"

Does it say that the drive is already shared or does it give you a security message like this? (see attachment)

also, you might try this registry patch which I created to bring your XP sharing security settings back to default state (it won't enable/disable existing shares however). It should get us closer to solving the problem, if not solve it completely.

Remember to reboot XP after merging the registry data.

Sorry I should have mentioned that the shared drive is on the 7 machine and the XP machine is unable to access it.

However this problem goes beyond the new drive. I tried to share a different drive just to see what would happen and it would not allow access even though permissions are set to full access for everyone.

I set the 7 machine up to share the video and music drives and then I moved all the music to the other drive and when I did that it fouled something up because now I can't access any new shares created on the 7 machine since adding the new drive.

You wouldn't think adding a new drive would change anything. But I double checked all my settings on both machines and the XP machine can still access video so I know it should be able to access the new shares.

The message I get on the XP machine says the drive cannot be accessed and that you may not have sufficient permission to access the destination and at the bottom it says access denied.

Permissions were properly set and the video drive is shared and can be accessed without an issue with the same settings. So this really has me stumped.

Access denied is a permissions problem.

If you want to give me Teamviewer access to your Win7 box, I can take a look. As it stands right now, I don't know even know whether or not you have password protection on or off. There are many different places to look depending on the problem.

Well password protect is off. That was one of the first things I did. Permissions shouldn't be a problem because I gave the folder full access to everyone and that should allow any user who accesses it to have full control and anyone should be able to access it because there are no restrictions set.

Sharing worked fine until I installed the drive that's why I can't figure out where the problem came from. And because sharing still works on the one drive I shared prior to installing the drive but nothing that I share since I am puzzled.

I thought it was a permissions problem too but checking my permissions shows everything should work fine.

when you're talking full access, are you talking about share permissions or file system permissions? because they are two different things. Everyone can only access the share if they have proper file system permissions as well.

btw, if you didn't know this already, you can set the file system permission on the "Security" tab of folder or drive properties. If the "Everyone" group isn't listed with proper permissions, there is your problem.

Ok I see the problem now. By default "Everyone" was not in the security tab. Why it was there on other things before who knows but I had all of the other permissions in the security tab set to full access and since "Everyone" was no there it didn't matter.

I looked at the working shares security and saw that "Everyone" was listed and then looked at the shares that weren't working.
