Hello Everyone,

I need some advice on installing Windows 7 updates on a new install. Most of the time I can wing it to get these updates installed but it seams I'm stuck. As is posted all over the net using Windows update in 7 just sits there and spins "searching for updates" for hours on end (I ran for 9 hr's and it was still looking) and each of MS's stand alone installers KB3145739, KB3138612, KB3161608 etc does the same thing.

So I then tried both Autopatcher and WSUS Offline Update tools and while both found and downloaded the updates as soon as I try to install I'm right back to waiting and waiting with nothing installing. Both Autopatcher and WSUS seam to first install KB2533623 and gets hung on it as Autopatcher installed the first module and made it to 98% then stopped and it took over an hour to reach 98%. WSUS also tries to install KB2533623 first and just sits there with a blinking cursor.

Both seam to launch wusa.exe in task manager and I'm wondering if that's the problem. This is a Licensed and activated version of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and I did install the stand alone SP1 pack prior to trying to install the updates but I'm at a loss as to my next steps since all 3 of the methods have failed. I tried to run just KB2533623 alone but that launches the "searching for updates" and I'm stuck again.

Any advice on what I can try next or an easier way?

Using which method? Right now I have WSUS running and installing but should I continue or close and use Windows update or Autopatcher?

Roy,

Ok. I download KB971033 but I'm going to wait to run it as I seamed to take a step forward but I don't know if that's good or not. As I was still running WSUS a pop up window said "Windows Update Found Updates" please reboot. I did.....Windows did it's thing and when I checked in Installed updates it installed 4 updates, KB3045685, KB2993651, KB2729094, and KB2813430.

And all show "Failed" in status. But what DID appear were the other updates (210 of them) so I weeded out (unchecked) the Windows 10 few and selected "Install Updates". So now instead of the looping "Checking for Updates" I have a looping "Preparing to Install" for the last 3 hours.

So will running KB971033 do anything to fix this issue with the updates as I can now see them but am stuck on installing them? I don't want to stop that "Preparing to install" if it has a chance of completing the task of installing the updates however if your sure it won't complete without that KB then I'll do that next.

Solved (mostly)

Thanks for all your help guys. I was finally able to solve this issue after a few tries and I still have 1 of 4 updates left that is causing "configuring windows" to hang but I got 241 of the 245 updates with only 2 that failed.

Failed: KB2861208
KB2742631 (Both .Net Framework4.5 related)

Don't remember the other 4 but one was IE11 so really only 1 of the other 3 was causing the hang.

Thanks again!

Already did. Do NOT want to go though this again so as long as I have no new main hardware failures I can restore from the image.
