Solved New installation of ATI HD3650 graphics card not recognised by Win 7

I have just installed a new ATI Radeon HD3650 PCIE 1Gb graphics card in my HP dc5750. At the same time I replaced the 165 Gb HDD with a new WD 465 Gb drive and did a clean install of Win 7 Professional. I have run all the updates, including SP1. The machines has a 2.2 Mhz dual core cpu and has 3 Mb of RAM on board.
The dc5750 previously had no graphics card installed, but integrated video.
All of the above went smoothly and the PC is functioning normally, except that the HD3650 does not appear under Device Manager and is not recognised. It is working, I can tell, as the fan is running (it is noticeably noisier than without the card, but quite acceptable) and what is listed is an AMD High Definition Audio Device within Device Manager.
Before buying the new card, I checked the original spec of this machine - bought new three years ago but not heavily used. The HD3650 was listed as the top of the range card fitted as OEM to this machine, so it should be fully compatible.
I have downloaded the latest ATI drivers, but this has had no effect.
Also, though I have speakers attached, I am getting audio out of one only, since the upgrade.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you checked the BIOS on your HP DC5750, to ensure that it is not forcing internal integrated video?

Typically there is an "auto" setting to automatically detect the optional presence of a discrete graphics card and to use it if present. Or if you know you have a discrete graphics card installed you might set the BIOS to always use it (from the PCIe slot). Or whatever. But if you previously didn't have a discrete graphics card until now, perhaps that BIOS setting is set at "internal graphics only" thus preventing the new HD3650 card from being detected and utilized.

As far as the HDMI audio device showing up, that does suggest the card is visible to Windows.

Are you sure you used the correct "legacy" Catalyst drivers downloaded from the ATI site? They have two classes of supported hardware now: (a) HD5000 and newer, and (b) HD4000 and older. If you were using the "latest" Catalyst 13.12 drivers it would only support HD5000 and newer, and your HD3650 video card would not be supported, hence no video Display Driver would have been installed for it although the HDMI audio perhaps could have been. But if you used the proper "legacy" 13.1 version of Catalyst driver then your HD3650 should have been detected and proper Display Driver installed, along with the HDMI audio driver.

Those are my initial questions.

if you are getting video from the graphic card then its working, if you get "NO signal" when connecting a dvi/hdmi cable to it then something is a miss.

If you still have the dvi/hdmi cable attached to the motherboards output then it will continue using the Integrated GPU.

He said the HD3650 does not show up in Device Manager.

If it was seen as a generic VGA adapter but no driver had yet been installed, it would appear that say. Or, it might show up in "other devices" with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. No matter whether a cable is connected from it or not, the card should appear in Device Manager if the BIOS recognizes its presence.

But if it is simply not anywhere in Device Manager then the BIOS is not recognizing it. That to me suggests a BIOS setting that is forcing internal graphics.

OK, I checked the driver that I downloaded, which is: 13-1-legacy_vista_win7_win8_32_64_hydravision. Is this the right one?
I reinstalled it; no change. In Device Manager, under Display Adapters, I have "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". Under Sound , Video and Game Controllers, I have: "AMD High Definition Audio Device" and, secondly, "High Definition Audio Device". Both have a small loudspeaker icons before the description, but the AMD one has a small downward pointing arrow superimposed on it.
I have pressed F10 on start up to go into Set Up to modify the BIOS, but cannot find any mention of video adapters in order to enable/disable.
I have one monitor connected to the VDI connector and one to the VGA connector; both on the HD3650 card. However, on start up, the screen says VDI Active, but VGA No Input Signal.
I had already tried connecting the monitors to the integrated graphics connectors, but I got no signal output from either card; blank screens.
What I haven't done yet is to take the HD3650 out, reboot, shutdown again and reinstall the HD3650. What I also didn't do origionally was uninstall the integrated video driver as I presumed that this would be overwritten by the new driver. If I do uninstall the existing driver, will I still have a screen to work with when I reboot prior to reinstalling the HD3650 driver?

That is the WRONG driver file.

You have downloaded the second driver package on that page, which is clearly described as:

Description:
Package Includes:
HydraVision for Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows8. Requires that AMD Catalyst Control Center (listed above) be installed.


What you really want is the first driver file (v13.9) above it on the same page, which is Catalyst described as:

Description:
Package contains the following graphics drivers and dependent/required software for the products specified in the current version's official release notes for the 64 bit version of Windows Vista and Windows 7:
Display Driver ver. 8.97.100.11
OpenCL(tm) Driver 10.0.937.2

In Device Manager, under Display Adapters, I have "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter".

That is the HD3650!! With no driver installed, it will show up simply as this.


Please install the proper driver, and then report back. Take the "custom" installation route, and ensure that "Display Driver" is one of the items that shows up to be installed.

OK. I downloaded the correct 13.9 driver and, just to make sure, used the AMD autodetect app. It, not surprisingly, found a Radeon HD3xxx PCIe graphics card and recommended that same driver.
I went for Custom and was offered the following, all prechecked for installation:
AMD Catalyst Install Manager; AMD App SDK Runtime; HDMI Audio Driver (with a note at the bottom that this was already installed correctly); Microsoft Visual C++ (greyed out but ticked); Hydravision; and. lastly. AMD Vision Engine control.
When I start up the Vison Engine, a pop up tells me that the desktop is being unloaded as an AMD driver is not running.
There is no change within Device Manager. Do I uninstall the Integrated Graphics Driver?

I went for Custom and was offered the following, all prechecked for installation:

I wanted you to ensure that the "Display Driver" item was shown to be installed, but apparently it was not.

And if it's not being shown, and not checked, then it's not going to be installed.

All of the other items shown are fine (although things like HydraVision and AMD App SDK runtime are just a waste of time, along with things like the various "transcoder" items which you didn't mention, perhaps because they're not available on your older HD3650). But the KEY item we absolutely are looking for and which obviously should have been presented as available for install is the "Display Driver". I don't understand why it's not shown. I don't think it should have been caused by your earlier improper install of the Hydravision package.

Whatever the reason, that's our current problem... and our mission is to get that v13.9 Catalyst package to present the Display Driver to you on the list.

I'd "start over", completely uninstalling everything you've currently got installed. Then re-boot, and re-run this 13.9 Catalyst installer file again (and hope it shows "Display Driver" this time).

The best way to remove everything ATI is to run the old "Driver Sweeper" program. This is now an unsupported "legacy" product, because the product has become the new "Driver Fusion" program. It is this Driver Fusion product which is current, live and ongoing. It comes in both a free and paid version. I use the paid version (since I support software developers whose products I use) but I suspect the free version will probably work, as should the older Driver Sweeper as well (but I feel more confident using "active" software products).

Anyway, remove everything, re-boot, and then re-run the v13.9 Catalyst installer and let's see what happens. You absolutely need to see "Display Driver" on the list of features to be installed.

One more possibility. It's conceivable that the ATI site is incorrect, and somehow that v13.9 Catalyst driver doesn't really support the HD3650. Seems hard to believe but if the "hardware id" of the device is not named in the INF file contained within this Catalyst driver package then it is not considered a "supported device" and running the installer in "custom mode" will simply bypass the presentation of Display Driver because there is apparently no hardware device supported by the INF file in the driver package.

So... on that "VGA graphics adapter" item shown in Device Manager, right-click, select Properties, select the "details" tab, and then from the "property" dropdown list select "hardware id". Then right-click on the first item shown in the hardware id values, and select "copy" to copy the whole value to the clipboard.

Then "paste" it into a reply on this thread, so we can see what your hardware claims it is. Then I can look in the INF files in that 13.9 package to see if it's genuinely supported as the ATI site claims it is. If not, I have an earlier file (13.1) and I'll see if it's supported there.

Just for example, I have an HD4850 card in one of my machines. This, too, is considered a "legacy" card. When I perform the above described steps, I end up with a hardware id of:

And it is the front of that (i.e. "PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9442") which describes the vendor (AMD) and device (HD4850). But AMD has gone through a change in driver INF structure this past year, renaming lots of hardware. So although HD4850 is not found in the INF files for the 13.1 driver files I'm currently running, this value of "PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9442" is.

So I'd like to see what the hardware id is for your HD3650, just to be sure that it truly is mentioned inside of either 13.9 or in worst case 13.1. If not, then that's why it's not presenting "Display Driver" at custom installation time, and we would have to go back to an even older driver version (probably 12.x) to find it mentioned and supported.

Anyway, let's see what shows up when you explore.

On the top left hand side of your motherboard, you have connected/is connected a 12v cable to the 4/8pin header that powers the PCI lanes??

Well, a little research on the Interweb shows that the HD3650 PCIe version has a theoretical hardware id of:

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9598

and this device IS named in the 13.9 driver INF file.

So it should have produced the Display Driver item, if that's what your hardware id shows.

AHA!!! Device 9597 is NOT the PCIe HD3650 card which is supported by 13.9 Catalyst. Device 9597 is NOT named in the INF file, and that is why you're not getting the Display Driver presented on the Custom install list of features.

Where did you get this card? Is it an AGP card, or a PCIe card?? Or what?? If it is an AGP card then I think there is no Win7 support for it. Yes, WinXP probably supports it, but not Win7.

Sorry... that is a VERY OLD card. If your motherboard has an AGP slot, then your motherboard in that HP computer is also very old.

Anyway, I think we have finally gotten to the bottom of this mystery.

NOTE: it looks like there might be Win7 support for this AGP version of the card in the 10.1 drivers available from December 2009.

I don't know if you've installed 32-bit or 64-bit Win7 on your machine, but here are both versions of those old drivers:

32-bit Catalyst 10.1

64-bit Catalyst 10.1

If you want to try a newer Catalyst driver so see if they still have support for that AGP HD3650 in it (I would want to use the most recent version that does have support for the card), the techPowerUp site has everything for you to download.

You can do your own research here. Just download the file, run it (which will expand it into a folder somewhere that you specify), but when it gives you the opportunity to RUN the SETUP.EXE that just got expanded, you push CANCEL instead. Now you can manually look into the INF files contained within the folder that the installer expanded into and see if that value of "VEN_1002&DEV_9597" is present. If so, then that Catalyst version WILL support your card.

(NOTE: I use "Search My Files" to look inside folders/files looking for text, but any type of similar tool will work.)

Keep trying newer Catalyst installer files until it is no longer supported.

Just remember this is an old card, and these are old drivers.


One more note: you absolutely need to remove whatever you currently already have installed, before installing any back-level old drivers. So you should still use Driver Sweeper or Driver Fusion as I described earlier, to "clean everything out" and then re-boot, and then run the new Catalyst installer you want to put in.

Also, ATI only finally got their driver installer package so that you could [theoretically] just run a new version with a previous version currently installed, starting with 11.9 I think (or maybe it was 12.1). Before then you had to first UNINSTALL your current driver, re-boot, and then run the new installer... similar to what I want you to do with Driver Sweeper or Driver Fusion.

So, using these VERY old 10.x drivers you're definitely going to need to go through that whole uninstall-before-you-can-reinstall process, every time you want to try a newer driver out. Sorry, but that's the price to be paid for using this very old hardware at this point.

Hopefully your AGP HD3650 card is genuinely supported by at least 10.1 Catalyst.
