I no longer have Live Mail on my PC, so I can't check what you are doing.

Your responses refer a lot to "importing" and very little to "exporting".

Are you in fact starting Windows Mail and using its built-in export capability to export to a safe folder somewhere on your PC. This is what I think you should do.

Or are you starting up Thunderbird and then using its import function to grab something within Windows Mail? As I recall, you can't do that. I think you have to formally export from within Windows Mail, maybe just a folder at a time. And then start Tbird and import from that saved location.

You may be doing as I suggest, but I'm not sure from reading your responses.

I first tried to import by opening TB and setting up a new folder. Then I tried to use the Import Export Tool Add -On to import the .eml file to the new folder. I selcted only one folder with one email in it to try and keep it simple. Did not work.
I then exported one folder to my desktop from WM. I then opened TB and tried to import the folder from the desktop. It showed that it was importing and then it showed that it was complete. Went to the folder in TB and there was nothing there? Went back to the WM directory and found a duplication of the folder there???

Totally lost and I have given up as I am tired of having to return to the WM Directory to clean up the duplications.

Have you tried a direct drag and drop? Export one folder from Windows Mail to your desktop and then try to drag it into T bird folder (if "importing" fails).

In the export process from Windows Mail, are you given a choice as to the file format of the export?? If so, try alternatives.

It would appear that your "import" from the desktop apparently lands in Windows Mail directory rather than in Tbird. Maybe you have to set Tbird as default?

Tbird mail typically lives in C users yourusername appdata roaming Tbird as I recall. I think that is where any import ultimately has to land. That is where your profile is anyway. The Thunderbird "program" lives in C program files, but that isn't where your mail and address book is.

It may not matter, but did you first set up a mail account within Tbird--as if you had nothing to import and had never used Windows Mail?

I wish I could remember more from my attempts.

Unfortunately, you are finding out what I found out: the import/export capabilities between various email applications are very shaky. Not sure I understand why that should be when we are decades into PC mail programs.

Hi,

I first set up my account to ensure that I could send and receive email in TB. That worked great!

As far as D&D I tried that this morning with no success. The Import Export Tool Add On does give you the option of the file type WM does not. I was told to select a folder in TB then use the utility to import the .eml files from WM to the folder selected in TB. However it keeps importing back to the WM Directory?

If it is this much trouble importing the email what is it like importing the contacts? Ouch!!!!

It surprises me that they have already developed a beta version of Firefox (3.6) but they have done nothing with TB to accomodate

I am all but positive that I did not use the Import Export tool.

I don't have many contacts and think I ended up entering them by hand.

My advice: go to the Tbird forum at Mozilla. I imagine they have dealt with this many times and may even have a tutorial?

I have been there several times but they do not provide much detail other than to download and use the Import/Export Tool. Their instructions are very vague.

I just dug out a USB drive that had some old Word files that I had deleted from my hard drive.

Among them was a document with some brief notes about how I did it. Here is the reconstructed detail as best as I can provide it. I guess I did use the import export tool.

I exported only 2 folders: saved and sent.

I suggest you go to C users yourusername appdata mozilla (I think that is the path) and delete the Tbird folder.

Maybe even uninstall Tbird via control panel.

Reinstall T bird. Set up a mail account within it. Send yourself a test message to confirm it works.

Install the ImportExport tool extension.

Create a saved folder manually directly under “local folders”. Highlight it and then use importexport to import all saved messages. It is a little tricky and may or may not import all the subfolders—they may have to be done one at a time or it may work OK.

Thunderbird automatically creates a “sent” folder the first time you send mail—when you do the test mails, so any import of previously sent mail should be directed to this folder.

Importing address book: I was able to do this directly from Thunderbird’s tool/imports, but they don’t land in “personal address book”, but in a separate book below that. The individual entries are scrambled somewhat and have to be hand-edited. I thought there was a way to copy them from the separate book to personal address book, but I couldn’t find it. So, I manually made new “cards” for the personal address book.

That's the best I can do. I do now recall that part described above in the paragraph beginning with "create" was frustrating/peculiar/non-intuitive, but I did get it to work.

I will give it a try What I am going to do is delete TB from the computer. Then I will delete all of the Mozilla Thunderbird Directory as well and start from scratch We only have dial up in this area so this will take a while but once I get a clean slate I will start over. I have printed your email and will try to follow along to see what happens. By the time I get this completed (if I do) Mozzilla will probably have a fix with version 3.0.

Once again "Thank You" for your help and patience on this very confusing issue.

Will let you know how I make out.

I use Outlook and like it. Though has anyone else experienced Outlook Not Responding for a few seconds when clicking on the Inbox or when editing folders? I'm wondering if it's just my crappy internet connection or if it's something else.

Not sure if you mean 2 email addresses with a single ISP or email accounts with 2 different ISPs.

I have no trouble with Thunderbird and 2 email addresses (2 accounts) with a single ISP.

My ISP allows a number of aliases. I have one reserved for forums etc. so if it gets spammed I just change it. I have another for friends and one specifically for banking and online purchases. Thunderbird will not allow me to set these up as the account name is identical for all aliases. Is there any way to overcome this? No problem with Wiondows Mail.
