New monitor

Cannot afford one just yet but in case my son wants to buy me a birthday present or I win the Lotto beore Chistams I am looking at a reasonably priced 27" monitor around $250 - $280.

I have picked some out and wonder if anyone has any thoughts on these taking into consideration my budget and the fact that out here the gear is either very expensive or just reasonable for that sort of money.


I always buy from this site and their range is fair but nothing like Newegg for example. I have nearly all 24" at the moment and my lean is towards the Benq but the Samsung looks good too. Am not wanting audio just decent graphics but opinions please.

Go with LG if any of those Brands I purchased a monitor about 2 to 3 months ago and i tell you it isnt easy but if you look real good go with LG ,ASUS or ViewSonic

They were both top rated and well reviewed, along with the BenQ, at the time I bought mine. All 3 are excellent consumer grade TFT monitors.

I wasn't sure about the Acer over the Asus but took a chance to save a few bucks and do not regret it. I got the H271HL and I'm completely satisfied with it.

If your mission is gaming you might consider the Asus for the faster GTG response time. I don't know how much of a difference that makes (hardly any in AutoCAD!).

+1 for the ASUS I almost went that way but I was really fond of the 27" ViewSonic Full HD

Also Acer is a nice brand as well also keep in mind this is the Season for Deals so you might even catch something better for the same amount of money

I like Asus too. I have 2 24" Asus monitors and they have both been great.

I have three (22") 16:10 LG L227WTG monitors and they are awesome. The picture is stunning. Spend a bit more on a quality brand as it is your eyes that will be looking at the screen. If you can see the screen in another store take a look. I was all out to buy a Samsung but saw the LG which blew away the opposition.
LG generally have excellent screens in them which are made by LG Philips. Samsung is a good brand. Benq not so much.

Just a little word about the LG you have linked to, I had essentially the same model, just the 23" model, it had "touch" buttons for the settings and also for the ON/OFF. At first I thought it was cool, but after a while it became a bit of a pain and I often had to touch the ON button several times before it would finally register and switch on.

The picture quality was great, but I just thought I would warn you about the touch thing so you know.

As paul said don't get a model with the light up sensor buttons those seem to take a crapola after a few uses get a hard button that way you will atleast be able to turn it on and off with ease and also eliminate the extra headache of trying to turn it on

Honestly, I would not mess with a 27" 1920x1080 monitor. If I were going to step up to a 27" it would be 2560x1440 resolution. With that budget, I would get a 23-24" monitor with a GOOD panel(NOT TN PANEL). There are several monitors that are 23-24", 1080p resolution, and have a good quality panel. Good quality panels are IPS, PLS, VA....TN panels are cheap and not worth buying anymore with how many good panels are out there now. The Dell Ultrasharp line of monitors are really nice, as well as Samsung, and Asus. I mention those brands because I know for a fact they are really starting to put those quality panels in quite a few of their monitors now........not because they are the only people who make good monitors.

If you are interested in staying with a 23-24" with a GOOD panel, let me know and I can show you some.

Thanks everyone well it is down to the Benq or the LG and well the LG is ahead I reckon. The Asus is $325 out here and a fair bit over my budget.

The good side is the LG is made by Philips and I have a Philips 244E 24" and it's screen is just fabulous I would say even tad better than the Benq.

I have three and the other is a Toshiba Tecra and it's screen is real nice too but as everything I touch that is Toshiba it has gone feral on me with stripes of missing pixels along the taskbar. Usable but a shame as it is a good monitor.

Mine do not have the invisible touch buttons but my wife's 23" one does. I have already replaced all the capacitors (5) in each of them that wear out causing the power supply not to work. Thankfully the monitors need very little adjustment.

Now I am guessing that you mean touch as in keyboard type switches and not a toggle type wet up. Mine are all just set and when I switch the power on the UPS they all just fire up - don't like things in standby mode not that I am worried about the power more that I only like the essential stuff on for fire cause reasons.

Now that is a lot of caps to be replacing Indie it leaves me with thinking perhaps they were under designed by LG or whoever or maybe just a cost cutting thing.
To be frank I don't want to have t thinking about that if I get a monitor.
Perhaps the Benq might be better then?

I certainly didn't shell out that kind of money either!

Maybe if you are working in the movie industry, or doing high end photo or graphics editing it would justify the cost, but for us regular folks, I bet we couldn't pick a PLS monitor out of a lineup!
