You know what is funny, all my gaming clan and friends that build AMD/ATI systems have non stop problems on XP/Vista/W7. Mostly lagging, chopping, and just pathetically slow...and these are PRO built systems! I have build computers for many years, and I am an Intel/Nvidia guy, and NEVER have any system I made had those issues (excluding out dated graphic/cpu of course). I would honestly say though...your biggest issue is A: the brand of video card sucks B: Your ram sucks or you have Corsair...which is the worst EVER! Use Mushkin, Patriot, or Kingston HyperX (absolutely no value ram LOL) although Kinston is a bit slower yet it is stable as a rule (some motherboards reject Mushkin for some reason...which I would say that mobo blows then...like EVGA! their boards are so ram picky, sheesh)
No I am not an AMD/ATI hater, I just prefer smooth systems. ROFL

Well i try some tweaks but nothing, i updated phisX that didn't help, i installed latest 9.9 drivers for my ati card and nothing again, whatsoever now it crash and somethimes dont want to start the game... I play alot of games on this sistem for ages and one i did have problem.. and i know this is all nvidia intel deed they want to kill amd ati that is for sure... well one proof of angry ati amd usres are here

AMD Game Forums - ATI/AMD performance on Need for Speed Shift
(this is the link to other forum just for demonstration, nothing else:confused:)

And it is strange but the game runs poor also on my macintosh G5 with intel quad core and 8800gt with 4gb of ram... I hate nvidia bc they keep the monopol, and they buy ageia phisicx and call it nvidia phisicx and make it work only on nvidia graphic cards, like ati cant do the phisics of flags effect in mirrors edge loool ... ati vs nvidia battle is no good for end users!

Hey the first thing an AMD guy said that made sence. However, before Nvidia bought Physix, Ageia's still did not work with ATI. It was not because of the video card war, rather it was because ATI was working on their own (name started with an H, goes back a few years so dont remember it). The game developers are the ones that went with the PhysiX rather than ATI's version, for reasons I do not know...perhaps Ageia's was better? That is speculation of course. All I know is the i5's price vs. Performance, AMD is dead if they don't do something quick...and as an Intel user, I DO NOT WANT AMD to die because then Intel can do what it has always dreamed of...rape every PC user and charge $500 on "budget" processors and sell mid levels for what the extremes currently go for! THAT WOULD SUCK
Anyways, which 8800GT is it, I know the 8800GTS models were good, but some of the GT's were not. It is possible that card is a first generation and not a "improved" model. I even noticed the 320MB was faster than the 500MB and the 640MB, etc, something to do with the memory modules on them.
Updating Physix is not going to resolve it. I am going to get the game so I can look at what has changed on the engine. Maybe I can figure out a solution as modding either windows core or the game engine itself to run on peoples dinosaur computers is what I do (not that I am calling your computer that lol). One thing, disable any motion blur, bloom, and particle effects, post effects, those are killers. Smoke is bad too as that is a Physix effect. The 8800's took a dump when Post Effects and Particle Effects were introduced...which was never really resolved untill the GTX 260 and up cards. Looks like game developers are in kahoots with Nvidia? ROFL

PS Don't feel too bad, a buddy of mine has a Sapphire 4870X2 and my GTX260 at 35% the cost murders his card. Another buddy of mine has an ASUS 7600GT TOP (256MB) that out preforms it in Demigod by 20FPS, now that is serious ATI chunk blowing...not to mention the 90C temp...which after my air cooling mod brought down to 50C!

I installed and played on full graphics last night at full HD resolution......i have a radeon rx3870 with 512mb ram .......although i havent installed any ati drivers or the catylst centre i'm still with the standard win7 drivers for my card :o havent had time to download and install latest yet.

I had no issues at all played 100% perfect on my overclocked e4600 INTEL:D core2duo with 4 gigs of ram

Well reading this comments and don't know what to say. I mean i am ati amd fan since i switch from geforce 4 to ati radeon 9600, that was like in 2003/04... Having my computer since 2000 and upgrading it on every 2 years. Last i buy was a ati 4850 and im not a pro gamer and can't spend a lot of money but im totaly satisfied with my config and i can play anything on this machine on high... except nfs shift... And i hate intel and nvidia all bc of monopol and high prices and also trying to kill competition so hard... Dont want amd ati to go away bc they are much afortable and have a good performance for casual users.

I didnt see any difference running ageia phisicx on ati and on nvidia till nvidia buy it and call it nvidia phisicx... then suddenly your ati card cant show waiving flags and some particles etc..(like in mirrors edge , the game suck anyway... ) ...

Well long story short i will not play nfs shift untill they do something about it ... The one patch come for shift but it only fix MOUSE so you can use mouse in meni and some multyplayer support... and still they know about the performance issue but still not working on it... im starting to hate ea games... and the only nfs **** i rally wanted to play(all other suck more or less) thet is closer to realyism and gt5 and forca motorsport is not working now... ill just wait /// for miracle patch

this is what i hear from one user

"I was on EA Support live chat last night because I didn't recieve the Promo code for the Porsche Cayman S (which they resolved). Whilst I was there I asked about whether they were working on improving performance on ATI cards. He told me that they had had a lot of complaints and that their engineers were working on it."

so i wait... or we wait ...

NFS Shift CTD

Windows 7 build 7600 x64 and Vista x64 Ultimate in dual boot here. All drivers up to date.

In Win 7 x64, NFS Shift starts & runs normally up to the point the actual race should start, where it crashes to desktop every single time. Haven't been able to run a race yet within Win 7. Very frustrating!:mad2:
Other games (CoH, CoD WaW, Anno 1404 plus others) run great in Win 7.:D
Have tried to run NFS Shift in Vista and XP compatibility mode - always the same CTD.

In Vista x64 Ultimate NFS Shift runs fine, though.

Planning to make a clean Win 7 (only) install later on, hopefully NFS Shift will work then (implying something's slightly borked in my present 7).

Cheers Uffe

Same happened to me but i reformatted my compuer (had a lot of useless crap on it) i then *acquired* a different copy of SHIFT and now it works great. i almost wish i didn't install it cuz the game's so damn hard with the keyboard lol
Anyways from what i gathered, if you installed the latest framework, then you shouldn't have. If you let the game install DX and Nvidia Physx, then also don't, instead get it from the Nvidia site directly not sure bout ATI cards cuz im not using one. If you decided to update your windows installer, then another no no. From what i learned and also from the words of someone else on this site (i forget whom), "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Try to use all important drivers from manufacturer's site and again don't install anything you don't absolutely NEED. As you can see my specs, i can play the game without prob, but again i installed the latest .net framework 4 and the newest c++ and everything i thought i needed but turns out i didn't so somewhere something went wrong and now that i didn't do the same mistake everything works and looks beautiful!

@ustahl Try changing shadows quality. There is a known bug about that. For example, on one friend´s pc with low shadows crashed and with medium worked fine. Weird yeah.

I made a clean 7 x64 install on a different hdd, and now Shift works beautifully.:geek:
I guess I had applied too many tweaks on my previous 7 install, using Windows 7 Manager, Tweak-7, EnhanceMySe7en plus some additional registry hacks from various tweaking forums. It's soo easy to get carried away and overdo it in the wonderland of tweaking Windows...:o

There has to be a specifice windows install that triggers the malfunction in this game. when i reformatted my computer the other day i installed the game and it ran flawlessly. today i had a windows update and did a few roll backs on my restore point but after the install of the game and now it doesn't work. it crashes right before the race starts. i didn't change anything on the drivers so i know its something system related that can't handle something. i see this as a bug, and not hardware related. i've run into this scenario 3 times now on separate occasions so its definitely a windows related bug. Hopefully someone can actually track it down
