No 5.1 audio configuration over HDMI Windows 7

I am using the onboard audio and video of my mobo. it is supposed to support 8 channel audio. I am using an older avr that doesn't have hdmi in so that's why i'm going direct to my avr via spdif. I disabled the hdmi of the mobo in the bios.

When i'm using htpc hdmi -> tv -> avr w/ spdif i think the tv maybe only able to do dolby digital and that's why the htpc only recognizes 2 channels... but why it's still only seeing 2 channels with spdif going direct to the avr is beyond me. but somehow the avr plays all 5 channels.

Can you specify what models exactly are your AVR and your TV ? What is the brand of your motherboard ?

It is possible that your onboard soundcard is able to process 8 channel audio but maybe it is outputting DTS and not Dolby Digital.

My receiver is an old panasonic sa-xr55. It was given to me by my brother that claimed it was one of the hidden gems of that era.

My tv is a Toshiba 40SL500U LED.

Mobo is Asus P5N7A-VM.

All your components seems to be ok, but I have doubts about the motherboard. It might be having problems outputting 8 channels. Did you tried to update the last drivers and play with the settings of the audio card ?

your AVR devices seems to be able to process both DTS and Dolby Sound. The question now is how is it connected to your tv ? Assuming that you're AVR is connected with either DVI-SPDIF to the motherboard or with HDMI. Any others options are likely to fail as your TV is not fit for analog and going analog between the AVR and the motherboard is too much of a mess to even think about it.

I have tried to play with the device settings. I upgraded the drivers then I tried uninstalling them as well.

The avr has no hdmi so it's connected to the TV via sdpif from the TV digital out.

How is your AVR linked to the computer motherboard both video and audio ?

If the AVR is connected via SPDIF, what kind of connection you are using for the video part ?

The computer video goes directly to the TV via hdmi. the hdmi audio has been turned off in the bios.

The computer audio goes directly to the avr via sdpif. The avr is not capable of receiving video from the computer.

Ok I understand properly now.

Even if you turned off the HDMI in the bios, your TV still detect an HDMI-in. I'm not sure if this can have influence on the result. This would need to be looked at. I had my share of problem hooking computers and TV throught others devices.

I am pretty sure that you cannot have HDMI and spdif work together at their full extents. It is possible you have to manually set-up the audio card to output SPDIF ONLY, along with the AVR, Also If you have an option to maybe try a regular dvi-hdmi cable or whatever your video card is willing to accept that would fit with your TV.

So it is your AVR indicating 2 channel received right ?

I suggest you try outputting 8 channel directly to your tv without going throught the AVR and see if this working. This could indicate that there is a device conflict between your devices if this work...

At this point, it's hard to help you more from a distance. I would need to test it myself to make my own conclusions. I would ask others experience users to give on hand on this one.
