If you’re holding your breath while waiting for the 64-bit (x64) flavor of Firefox 4.0, feel free to exhale now.

The next major iteration of Mozilla’s open source browser will support 32-bit (x86) platforms exclusively, despite some very promising work from the browser vendor early in the development process for version 4.0.

Mozilla’s Director of Firefox, Mike Beltzner confirmed the fact that an x64 flavor of Firefox won’t be added to the existing x86 version, per the 32-bit/64-bit Internet Explorer 8 model.

Firefox users should not despair though. Fact is that Mozilla hasn’t given up on delivering a 64-bit version of Firefox, just not with Firefox 4.0.

“I've been working on the list of supported platforms for Firefox 4 and wanted to provide an update on some decisions that have been reached,” Beltzner noted.

“In February of this year, there was a discussion in which we decided that the minimum supported version of Mac OS X would be 10.5 (Leopard).

Wait, WHAT!?!?!?!? The whole reason I was going to switch from Google Chrome to Firefox is because there was going to be an official 64-bit version! Now I might as well just stick to Chrome and wait for IE9 x64 to come out.

Actually, isn't the x64 version called minefield (it was in version 3 )....... True, no x64 minefield build available.....Minefield 3.0.6 is very stable x64 build. Not sure about the statement about minefield being new name for the firefox 4.0 build. They are certainly posting about 4.0 beta 1 new features on the minefield home page.

I certainly would NOT bet any hard earned money on x64 flash.....Adobe doesn't seem to think that we really want/need it and as we all know what Adobe thinks is actually important....right? Since Adobe can't be bothered to actually get Flash x64 going (They have announced they are backing away from the x64 flash for Linux that has already been developed) maybe it's time to start backing away from Adobe products completely. I have been working with the Flash block add-on for my laptop and don't find I miss it much....all it seems to block is advertisements and I really don't need those. Slowly finding ways to live without flash and not missing it. Will be glad when we have alternatives because when the company responsible for a product can't be bothered to support it, it's time to move on.

Yep, there is a 64-bit version - but only as a Nightly Build, of course. Some people also compile 64-bit Firefox on their own - I have used a version of that, but it wasn't compatible with most of the add-ons.

Only today I installed a version of Firefox called Namoroka which is 64bit compatible.
It looks the same and I've lost none of my settings or bookmarks.
So far, I've no hiccups and it is running a lot smoother and faster, altho its still slower than IE8

Namoroka is the code-name for Firefox 3.6, so that's the version of Firefox you're running. It's probably not an official build, or why would it be called Namoroka instead of Firefox 3.6?

Mozilla use the codenames for nightlies. Though the person above yourself is using an old build of Firefox 3.6 (as they are at 3.6.9) but I do not believe they themselves release a 64-bit build of 3.6. I

3.0 was codename Gran Paradiso
3.5 was codename Shiretoko
3.6 was codename Namoroka
4.0 has not yet been assigned a codename.

Just wanted to post my 2 cents. If there was support for 64-bit flash then a 64-bit browser would be in demand. Since no flash no need for 64-bit browser. I run Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and have found that on my system Chrome is by far the fastest browser followed by FF 4.0b4, Safari, Opera, FF 3.6 and then IE8. Although IE comes in native 64-bit it is pretty much useless without flash. I don't like the ads, but YouTube and other video sites all use flash. Here is Adobe's statement on their labs website about 64-bit flash:

We are fully committed to bringing native 64-bit Flash Player for the desktop by providing native support for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux 64-bit platforms in an upcoming major release of Flash Player. We intend to provide more regular update information on our progress as we continue our work on 64-bit versions of Flash Player. Thank you for your continued help and support. It looks like Linux may get it first for reasons I don't know, but hopefully soon we will be browsing in full 64-bit mode. 32-bit works good for now, but if you have a 64-bit system, a 64-bit browser will run better, faster and more stable than 32-bit(for the guys that asked why do we want a 64-bit browser).

Slightly faster in quite a few web benchmarks. Only able to use 64 bit ActiveX controls if you're worried about security, as there's less ActiveX controls available. If you're not bothered about Flash then it's worth using a 64-bit browser.

Though once HTML5 properly takes off, there will be no point to 64-bit Flash.
