Hi,

Been having issues with a dell machine running windows 7 at work. First sign of trouble was when I tried to install office 2010, it just wouldn't play the installer kept running for ages and said there was an error. While trying to solve the issue noticed there was no regedit, just didn't exist on the machine. We needed access to a publisher file in a rush so I gave up and installed on another machine.

We recently had problems with router, had to be replaced. Machine was now on an unknown network. Told it was on a work network but file sharing still wasn't working. Switching it on in the advanced sharing section wasn't working. I learned this is most likely a firewall stopping it. Trying to run windows advanced firewall generated an error message telling me the service was not running. I open up services to start it and it's not even in the list. I Google some more and find a Microsoft fix it that solves the problem of firewall missing from services, and not being able to switch on file sharing, great. But no, the fixit refuses to run. I google the error code and find this is due to an incorrectly configured service, but then find this service is also not present on the system.

I'm now thinking that this must be malware of some kind. Norton Internet security is installed be doesn't appear to be working. I uninstalled. There was a client from Trend PC-cillin which I also remove. I then install Microsoft security essentials and run a scan. It finds a couple of trojans and a couple of java exploits.

I then run SFC which completes and reports no errors.

I think I'm now looking at a repair install, are there any other options, and should I be trying anything else to completely eliminate the malware first?

Let's first see if Malwarebytes' Anti-malware finds anything.
Click on the "free" button and make sure that the "Pro trial" is unchecked. Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. Copy and Paste that log into your next reply.

The networking has mysteriously started working again on this machine. It has some serious issues and I'm reluctant to even go near it for fear of being blamed for any resulting downtime. When (and I'm sure it is when, not if) it breaks again I shall re-post with the MBAM log. Thanks very much for your help.
