i've had the same thing happen on a laptop that is hardwired.. we go through an ISA client to reach the internet.... it now just stopped showing the yellow sign.. but i think it had to do with something on the firewall itself... but i was always able to access the internet regardless of what it said!

There is no network access because you are not part of a network. While the Internet is a network infrastructure it is not a local network, not treated as such. Being directly connect to the modem will do this. If you had a router between you and the modem, then a local network would exist.

that is true I find it myself, I find a router and install it and the yellow triangle with exclamation mark disappeared, that is problem that Microsoft need to fix it, because there is people that don't use routers at home, only DSL modem

thanks

It is not a problem. It is merely stating a fact that you have no network access because you are not part of a network. There is no issue here. As long as people can connect to the internet that is all they need to care about.

The best way I know to fix this problem. what I do for customers.
1. open network and sharing
2. delete the internet system that was pre installed.
3. open Make a new connection. and follow the steps outlined.
(do this for both vista and win 7.)
4. locate your NIC adapter - DELETE it. yes DELETE it totally and when it ask YES remove the driver also.
5. shutdown and REBOOT.
this allows either Vista or Win 7 to download install the proper driver for the system locate and find a new IP. it should then be no problem getting the internet connection to work correctly.
