So I just saw in the manual: Due to system restrictions, win 7 starter cant support extended monitor. But it seems that it could with another OS. I think its more important for me to be able to extend my monitor then to keep Windows 7 starter.

What i meant by the xp comment was that i had done it on another computer with xp (at the time i didnt realize it was a limitation of win 7 starter). If I put the linux on instead, will I be able to extend the screen? I will try Ultramon first either way.

and look for the system requirements for the distros

try the kubuntu Kubuntu | Friendly Computing if you download the live version first then you will have to burn the iso image to thumb drive if you have no optical drive

Forgive my ignorance, but with this knowledge now of the win 7 limitations, does it mean that ultramon and Dfusion wont be able to help me (as long as Im on win7 starter), or can they help me bypass them?

Thanks for the links. Before I make the switch I just wanted to ask you if its 100% certain that, regardless of whether I use ultramon or Dfusion, I will never be able to extend my screen onto an external monitor as long as WIN7 S is on my PC?

try and see if display fusion allows you to use the settings in wallpaper settings as in the post i sent with screen shot
that is true the version you have of windows 7 does not support multi monitors the Microsoft links will tell you. you dont have to wipe the win 7 off you can install linux alongside windows please read the linux links before you change if you run a live cd
you can run the distro from the thumdrive and if you like it just install it linux explains this quite easy in the steps to do it so if you choose to install choose INSTALL ALONGSIDE WINDOWS then you have the choice of running two operating systems on boot you choose what you want.

If the video hardware does in fact support dual independent monitors, then switching to XP or another OS that supports dual displays will work. My suggestion of running a live Linux distro was so you could test it too see if it does. Running a live distro doesn't require dual booting or even installing it to your hard drive so it has the least impact on your current OS. If you do get your dual monitor setup to work the way you want, then you can think about upgrading or switching your OS. If it still doesn't work, then nothing gained and nothing lost. You won't have to undo a dual boot or re-install windows 7 to get back to where you were before you started. If it does work you may want to consider doing an anytime upgrade to Home Premium. A side from giving Microsoft a little more money, all you do is type in the new product code to unlock the extra features.

EDIT: I went to download the manual for you model netbook but it wasn't a PDF file and I'm not keen on installing their software just to read it.

Thanks to all for the incredible support Im getting on this forum. I am very grateful. Alphanumeric, your suggestion sounds like a great idea to me (didnt realize i didnt have to uninstall anything before your last post), and I will try it tonight when I get home (or tomorrow at the latest), and post the results. As for the manual, it says that the comp. supports extended monitors, so my problem is clearly caused by limitations of my OS, as opposed to my machine itself. One more quick question, though: You say I can upgrade to Home premium online with a product key. Can I downgrade to XP in the same way, and if yes, will it cost me?

No you can't downgrade to XP without doing a re-install. Completely different OS. SOME OEM's were offering free downgrades to XP. You'd have to contact the manufacturer to see if you qualify. The way I read it, even the Starter edition has all the files installed that Ultimate does, its just that some features are disabled/not installed depending on what version you install. Anytime upgrade lets you enter a new product code to unlock the features supported by that version without having to have any install media. You don't need the DVD to upgrade all you need to buy is the anytime upgrade product code. You could go out and buy a brand new OEM disk if you wanted too. Its just that anytime upgrade is supposed to be cheaper and easier. Especially in your case as your netbook likely doesn't have an internal optical drive. Just compare prices before you commit one way or the other. Personally if the price is close between the two I'd rather have an OEM copy with the DVD.

hey aplha, thanks again for your suggestion. i am writing to you from my ubuntu distro. I am able to extend my monitor in this OS. I will give it some time before I make a final decision, but I am inclined to make the switch, or at least keep this parallel thing going so I can choose ubuntu when i need the monitor. If i dont like ubuntu, Ill just downgrade to XP.

I hear you, its hard going back once you've used dual screens for a while. I have two 19 inch LCD's. The only time I ever go single screen is to play games.
