Hey guys. Here's the deal - I went out two weekends ago and got myself a brank spanking new ASUS desktop. It didn't come with an installed OS, so I got my hands on a copy of Windows 7 Build 7048 - the 64 bit version. I was a little worried about using it as my first OS (without installing XP or Vista first and then upgrading) but as it was installing it said that it could be used as a first os without the need to have upgraded.

Anyway, to my problem - I don't have any sound. I've checked the volume levels, made sure it's not on mute and checked the playback on my speakers also. Everything's ok. I've checked the installed drivers - they say they're all up to date. When I play music on the desktop, I can see the volume levels changing - so it seems to recognise audio is playing, I just can't hear it.

When I go into Device Driver and look under sounds, it says it's a High Definition Audio Device. The driver provider is MS, the version 6.1.7048.0. After looking at some of the advice guides on here I've tried updating the drivers to the ASUS Windows Vista 64-bit audio drives, but it says that it doesn't recognise the OS.

Help me, Windows Seven forum users - you're my only hope!

Try compatibility mode for Vista by right clicking the install .exe, choose properties, then compatibility tab. Check the box for "run this program in compatibility mode for:" Vista and the 2 service pack versions also should be selectable. Try them.

Also, before you do, ensure that the speakers you are using are plugged into the green audio port in the rear of the case.

OK, tried to run the compatibility mods for both Vista and Vista SP2 - no dice. It still says I'm using the wrong OS for the options I've selected.

Yes, I've also made sure that the speakers are plugged into the green audio port, and I've also alternated them with my headphones and tested the both to make sure they both are in working order, which they are.

Hrmmm. Go to the control panel and click on sound. Make sure there isn't something else chosen as the default audio, such as HDMI output as part of a video card. Sorry if I am making basic suggestions that you know already, though. Good luck.

Wait a tic, that might be it... The playback device is Digital Audio (HDMI), but if I go to the recording tab, my mike is listed as the default device. I've got it showing a line in option, but no line out...

Trust me, I know how it works - half the time it's not some major mystery, it's just that one box is ticked or not ticked etc. I'm more than happy to run through the 100 question checklist if one of them is the magic one

Ya, you gotta go on the playback tab and set your motherboard chipset as the speakers (default device) instead of HDMI. In my case, it is "Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller." Then play an mp3 in wmp or if using winamp, set that to also use the chipset as default. See how it goes. If still no good, maybe Windows Update will do somethin for ya. Ya gotta have sound man!

Ok Try a right click on the speaker icon, select playback devices - you should see a selection of output options there should be a green tick against the speakers option. If not select it and set it to be the default sound device

OK, have done that and all I can see is the sole HDMI player...

It looks like for some reason Windows is not seeing the Analogue HDA - this reason could be that the hardware is not enabled in the bios, you may want to check in the BIOS settings that the sound is enabled, I have seen this where new machines are set up with just the digital sound active

Hmmm, ok - how do I do that? Sadly, for a glasses wearing college graduate I have a limited knowledge of the internal workings of computers, and I'd rather not have a very nice looking and expensive paperweight...

How you get into the BIOS varies from system to system but is normally a case of pressing either the DEL or F2 key when right at the start of booting the machine (before windows Boots) but there should be a message appear on the screen saying press ... to enter setup or similar

Once into the bios use the keys to select the correct page (normally "Integrated peripherals" or similar) and you should find one or more sections relating to the on-board sound system.

Hope this helps, You may have better information in any documentation you received with your system

I couldn't find it in the BIOS options - the only audio options I could see were on the south bridge options on the chipset. I looked at the documentation and they've been thoughtful enough to include it in every language except English. Oh well, perhaps this could be my incentive to learn Turkish...

Yup, the Azalia setting is on. No, there's no other icon in the tray other than the standard volume control.

This is strange as you see the driver in the device manager but it does not show in the control panel.

All I can suggest is to go into the Device manager right click on the Sound driver and select uninstall, (if you see an option to remove files say yes).

Then you should be able to "scan for hardware changes" and let Windows re-install - hopefully this will "find" the Analogue sound controller and solve the issue.

Other than that It may be a hardware problem with the chip itself
