So I recently upgraded from windows xp to windows 7 and have been having problems with my sound card. When I select a Playback Device I don't get sound if I choose Creative SB X-fi. However I do get sound if I choose High Definition Audio Device. When I have the Creative SB X-fi selected as a Playback Device and play a song or something with sound, I can see the bars show it's playing sound but I can't hear anything in my headphones.

Also for microphone settings just like Playback Device if I select High Definition Audio Device my microphone works but selecting Creative SB X-fi microphone it doesn't work.

Am I to understand you have plugged speakers into both the built in audio device and the x-fi card?

Sound coming from the high definition audio device indicates to me that the speakers are plugged into the motherboard not the audio card.

...you should also disable one when using the other.

I have a headset plugged into the back of my computer too where my soundcard is no other sound device is plugged in. I'm talking about right clicking the bottom right corner and going into playback devices and recording devices. Choosing which one is "default" too use. Selecting High Def gives me sound choosing the sound card I get no sound.

sigh from the top

the only way i get sound is enabling my on board sound and selecting High Def Audio. Selecting creative gives me no sound. Also I have to do the same for the microphone enabling on board and selecting HDA for it too work.

I have tried every driver / fix on creative website. Would like to beable to use the $300 GFX card atleast... Let alone creatives fail drivers for w7

Let's start with the basics, you installed the Nvidia chipset drivers?

NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.58 WHQL

Also with the various drivers you have been using System Restore of reloading a clean image after each try? Sound card drivers (and not just Creative's) can and will mess up with repeated installs and uninstalls of drivers.

I'm not sure as I wasn't the person too install everything after changing my OS. How would I check.

No I haven't been using system restore after trying new drivers however the sound never worked to begin with.
