Solved No USB driver for Win7 on an HP Envy h8-1414

I clean installed Windows 7 on a HP Envy Hp-1414 that came with Window 8 installed. Everything went well by following the guides offered by Teog and Brink.
That is until I tried to use the front USB ports. They would not recognize any sort of USB device I plugged into them.

I looked at Computer Management/Devices and found the Universal USB Driver was not installed. No Driver is what I remember the message to be. So I looked all over the web and could not find a Win7 or Vista driver that would work. Of course HP did not have a driver to either Win7 or Vista. I even spent some money and got what was supposed to be a Universal USB driver from Driver Update. At least, it was the one they recommended when the said mine was out of date. It would not install. I got a message from the installer that said the driver didn't meet minimum requirements. Go figure!

When Win8 was on the machine the front ports worked just fine.

Has anyone any idea how I can solve the driver problem?

Thank you.

Thank you very much Theog.

That sure seemed logical but unfortunately did not produce anything useful.

It is sad that my complete downgrade seems to hang up on this point. I don't really want to do without my from panel USB's.

An update on original post.

I think the problem is the front ports are USB 3.0 and the system has no drivers for that. I say that because if I plug either of my two external hard disks into one of the rear ports everything is fine. Now you might say the problem is a hardware one with respect to the front ports but I don't think so on account of how they work just fine under Windows 8.

So that leads me to ask where can I fine drivers for USB 3.0 under Windows 7 on an HP. At HP? No that is not the case as far as I can determine. Nor anywhere else either.

Thanks again.

Hope this helps someone come up with a solution.

When Win8 was on the machine the front ports worked just fine.

Has anyone any idea how I can solve the driver problem?

Thank you.[/QUOTE]

Thank you Caperjack

No, I haven't tried the Win 8 drivers yet. I wasn't aware they could be installed in a Win7 compatibility mode. How do I go about that?

Will go to HP's driver site and download what I can find.

Thanks again.

Thank you CyberMan.

I'm sorry to report that didn't solve the problem. Anyway I looked at Bel Arc Adviser and it reported my MB as a Gigabyte 2AC8. I will hop over to their board and see what I can find.

Maybe you got me started on the right track.

Thanks again.

No worries it may be between these three boards the GA970A-D3, GA970A-DS3 or GA970A-UD3 with the AM3+ socket.

Link below to gigabyte:

GIGABYTE - Support & Downloads - Downloads

Glad to have pointed you in right direction i would have thought those AMD drivers may have worked after a restart, but maybe a customisation may have been done to the original AMD chipset driver by the motherboard manufacturer.

Well, I tried to get a suitable driver from those you mentioned but had no luck. No USB 3.0 ones around at all.

I did write Gigabyte about the problem and asked a for a solution. Their response was that I had to contact HP. As you know, HP doesn't want to have anything to do with Win 7 on the h8-1414 so that was a dead end.

I did surmise the 2AC8 MB was build specifically for HP and maybe some other manufacturers for their product lines and Gigabytes doesn't service then for users. May be wrong about that but there is no mention on the 2AC8 in their product line.

Anyway, I'm not going to give up on this quite yet. Will keep trying for another week or so before I revert the machine to Windows 8.

Thanks again for all your patient help.

First, never pay for a driver, those site are just rip offs.

It may well be there won't be a driver for your laptop since many w7 machines only had USB 2.0 and I assume Win 8 ones will have USB 3.0. M$ doesn't really like upgrading to w7 from a Win 8 pre-install.

I think you maybe out of luck if niether of the manufacturer's have a driver and the AMD chipset which is for Windows 7 did not work then i think you may have to live with that i am sorry.

Like you say i think you will have to use Windows 8 which isnt a bad thing.

Stay away form any driver checker programs and such like that claim they have a driver as they probably won't work or want money as Britton30 has pointed out.

Sorry it could not be better news.

You are very welcome.

Don't know if this has been solved or not but here is the solution that worked for me.

I was able to locate an older Hp model that used the same motherboard. So I downloaded the drivers for the usb 3.0 and it worked. You cant install the drivers using the drivers installer that did not work but you will need to run it to extract the driver files. You have to let windows install the driver for you through the devices manager -> driver tab -> update driver -> browser my computer for driver -> then were it ask for the location point it to the folder where you uninstalled the driver contents too and leave include subfolders checked and it should find and install the driver for you. Its a texas instrument usb host controller. I can confirm that usb 2.0 works with it, but I do not have any usb 3.0 devices to test out.

Usb 3.0 Driver

hope that works for as it worked for me.
PS the installation instructions are also on the download page too. its just missing a step or two

I have this same machine and the drivers I downloaded from HP had all drivers needed except the USB3. The win 8 drivers from HP for this machine you can extract out of the executable using 7zip and get the Win7 drivers buried in the sub-directories. The usb3 driver I got to work is from Texas Instruments XHCI controller driver. Everything is working fine now on Win 7.
