Hi, I have not had any updates since 11 Jan in windows 7. I think something is wrong as I'm not even getting any defender updates.

My pc is checking everyday and when I manually check it says no new updates.

Everything is fine with my OS, is this normal?

Thanks

Yes that is normal. Microsoft offers most updates once a Month on the second Tuesday (called Patch Tuesday). Sometimes it will release a critical update at other times. The next date would be Feb 14.

It seemed like I have been updating everyday for months now, and then a lull...

Thanks for replies

* New updates are offered in the second week monthly.
It's also known as Patch Tuesday or Wednesday, depending where in the world you are...
On rare occasions (if a security vulnerability warrants it), Microsoft might release a patch out-of-band (meaning not on patch Tuesday/ Wednesday)... doesn't often happen though.

IMHO tis a good idea to have your computer set to inform you, but not download or install any updates offered.
Would also recommend you do a few at a time rather than oodles at once.

Reminder....
Make sure you have a current System Restore Point created PRIOR to down loading any updates.

Re Defender not updating.
When was your last update for Defender?
Are you receiving an error message?
If so what?

I practice the same WU roles as JHM. I set mine to inform but not install and if many updates I do a few at a time. I am also a but of a wimpt and usually wait about a week for updates to be "in the wild" before I install.

I was asking because some antivirus programs will disable Windows Defender.

Should have added that in my first reply..

I just figured out defender has been disabled, hence no updates, just got 15.1mb of defender updates...

Not sure how that happened, kids maybe , but I feel a bit stupid :o

Think thats things solved. Will just bide time until Patch Tuesday

Thanks again for all the input.

For me WU sets a restore point before installing any updates. I thought there was a setting to enable it but I couldn't find it. So maybe it does it every time.

Updates are certainly recorded in System Restore. I suspect it is done after the download /install.

I still create one manually before updating, just in case the update creates a nuisance, " glitch" etc.
My philosophy better to be sure than sorry..

I was a little spooked about this as well.

At least there's nothing to worry about according to others.

My Windows 7 updater is not working either. It stopped functioning January 9, 2012. I have tried Mr. Fixit and instructions from Windows site. I am using PCTools Spyware Doctor (was spyware doctor plus antivirus). Because I'm using this I have disabled Wndows Defender, but am still using Windows Firewall. I had stopped using PCTools due to trojans and went to MSE, but deleted that and went back to PCTools after problem fixed. I use Registry Mechanic for Registry cleanup so no remnants, or so I am led to believe. Not getting security updates (6 in holding plus one optional) is worst of it.
Windows 7 Home Premium, Comcast high-speed internet, Netgear wireless router-this is base station and hard wired to router. I don't think Firefox 10 or Internet Explorer 9 have settings to interfere.
I would appreciate any suggestions you have.

Hi jamescc4, and welcome to Seven Forums.

A lot of times trojans, malware etc. will block a system from getting Windows Updates.

Also, a Registry cleaner is not wise to use either.

I could be wrong, but you very well could be still infected.

I'd do a full scan with these two great programs to be sure. They are free.
