Solved Non-specific BSOD

d'Oh! I missed this this morning going to work. The drivers were downloaded and ready to install and I just installed'em. After reading your post I tried to re-install the non-chipset drivers this evening but it was a hit-and-miss affair, some of the setup routines recognised that they had already been installed. Anyway, I have installed 'em all higgledy-piggledy. I hope it isn't a problem.

Run SFC /scannow from an elevated command prompt using Option Two in the tutorial linked below. I just want to make sure the system files aren't corrupt.

If there's no errors reported, continue below. Otherwise, report back.

Run just the way it is for a day or so to make sure the system is stable. If it remains stable, create a restore point then add ONE of your software additions. Reboot and run that configuration for a day. If it remains stable for the day, create a restore point. If it's still stable, add ONE more and reboot. As long as it remains stable, keep doing this same procedure and allow a day to show the PC is stable. Be sure to create a restore point at the end of each stable day.

If you start getting BSODs, uninstall the last addition and reboot. Run SFC to make sure system files are intact. Skip the problem software addition and try the next. Keep doing this, ONE at a time, until you have all your optional software installed except for the ones that cause BSODs. Make a list of those and report back. Also, run the DM collector again and add the zip file to your post.

Scannow Result

This morning I had a crash and attach report with log of scannow (revealing corruption). Uninstalled the game I installed on Sunday (to provide load). Apart from Firefox 31 there are no other substantial programs installed.

AppleCharger.sys has been renamed. It's goneski (I hope). I will restart and fight on!

So far so good. Still using the Heavyload program to provide artificial work for the computer. Just installed the game I uninstalled a couple of days ago. We'll see what happens.

Artificial loads are good, I use them too sometimes. But, they are not really as good, as far as I'm concerned as actual usage situations.

Update

Machine is still crash-free. I have returned it to my son who is starting to use it when he's not fooling with his tablet (how things have changed). I expect once he gets to work on it any flaws will quickly make themselves know. Just going by my (rough) chronology, I think that Ken's remark about it being primarily a disk problem is likely to have been correct, despite the drive having passed the diagnostics.

It's Saturday afternoon here and I have just created a new restore point. I will have my son keep the machine at least ticking over till next weekend, installing any games that he wants, and if all goes well I will feel confident in pronouncing the patient cured (after two transplants) thanks to the ministrations and wise counsel of you gentlemen.

I will let you know how things are going in, I hope, a week or so.

That's good news. Really glad to hear things are going well. Please keep in touch and let us know how everything goes. If you know you are stable right now, I would get a couple of programs like Macrium Reflect and Paragon Backup and do an image of your hard drive to an external drive and keep it. If you ever have problems again, you could just wipe the drive and restore the image instead of doing clean installs. Both of those programs are free. I never trust one image and use at least 2 or 3 . Even the best ones fail occasionally.

The Latest From Wagga

The pc has been at my son's place for a number of weeks. No BSODs were recorded in that time. That is, there were BSODs but they were not recorded. One I saw referred to USB dramas but the others were spied only by my young bloke. I had re-tasked (ain't English a grand language) my troubled linux box and with a windows 7 install and the old ATI HD 5670 installed all might be well for the lad. Well, so it has proved. In the meantime I continue to work the problem child at my palatial, not to say grand, flat. This very message is typed on the trouble-maker. Seems to me that it's working v well indeed. As you fellows are well aware, many of these problems are due to pixie infestation. It seems the pixies have shot through. Of course, it could also be the retirement of the hard drive that is clearly the real source of my kid's woes.

I consider this problem to have been well and truly solved. You two are hereby extended a standing invitation to attend my mansion-style ground floor apartment in Wagga. If that doesn't suit, I can have temporary digs set up at my father's or brother's harbourside piles in Sydney (they really do, this is not part of the joke). My brother would definitely respect your status as venerable win 7 gurus.

I am so grateful for your help in solving this problem. I confess I came to enjoy the way you expressed yourselves. It has been a privilege to make your electronic acquaintances.

I think I know how to notify SF of my estimation of the kudos which is due you. If not, I will return to pester you anew
