Ok I have a machine with norton antivirus that is about to expire. I bought norton internet security (it was about half the price than renewing).

The question is do I need to uninstall norton antivirus or just put the new KEY in? I do want to replace nav with nis.

Thanks

Just wait until Norton Internet Security expires, then install Norton Antivirus.

You have it backwards. I have norton antivirus installed now. It is about to expire. I bought norton internet security(I have it on two other machines) and want to use it since i have a license for 3 machines.

I assume I can just put the new key in the norton antivirse machine and it will renew but I want to replace it with the internet security suite. Now I am confused. lol

Maybe

I would uninstall the AV before installing NIS. I don't know that it is required but I would do it that way as a percaution. I would imagine there is a difference in the keys between AV and NIS. They are two different programs at different prices. I don't think the key for one will work on the other. I am running NIS2011 with no problems.

The Norton Removal tool would be a good option.

It is always a good idea to uninstall an existing AV when you are upgrading to a different product. I believe that Symantec has a removal tool, you could check their web site forums to determine whether the nis will update and install over the top of their AV product.

Rich

PS: I would make an image before you remove anything and do the install, just to have the warm fuzzy of knowing that you can get back to where it worked ok.

Yes always use the appropriate Uninstall Tool

Also make sure you have a current System Restore point created.

Hi,

Please follow these instructions for a clean uninstallation of your Norton AntiVirus and to cleanly install Norton Internet Security. Please ensure beforehand that the latest version of Norton Internet Security 2011 (NIS 2011) meets your system requirements (go to "System Requirements" at this link):
http://us.norton.com/internet-security/

As the others have said, you need the Norton Removal Tool to cleanly remove Norton AntiVirus.
Note: the removal tool will wipe out your settings and any other Norton products installed on your computer.

-download NIS 2011 from here and save it to your desktop:
www.norton.com/nis11

-download the Norton Removal Tool from here and save it to your desktop:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN

-make sure you have got your NIS 2011 product key handy.

-deactivate any other security software you may have, such as Windows Defender. However, please leave Norton running. As a side note: running two real-time security programs on one machine is not recommended.

-create a system restore point

-disconnect physically from the internet (remove the internet cable) as a precaution.

-if you are in Vista or Windows 7: right-click on the removal tool icon, run as administrator; run the removal tool 2 times to remove Norton AntiVirus, rebooting each time after every run. Rebooting should happen automatically.

-after running the removal tool: if in Vista or Windows 7: right-click the NIS 2011 icon, run as administrator, let it install itself. When it wants to connect with the web, connect again to the internet. In order to activate NIS 2011, type in your product key. Run LiveUpdate afer installation and reboot your computer.

Instructions taken from my posts in the Norton Community.

That link has version 18.5.0.125. A new version 18.6.0.29 was just released but that link has not been updated yet. You should receive the new version through LiveUpdate. One of the fixes in the new version is for the problems with Identity Safe toolbar in IE9 and FF 4.0 and FF 4.0.1. If you don't get the update post back, I have another link for the new version.

That's why I wrote that the poster should run LiveUpdate after installing NIS 2011 - that way they'll receive the latest engine update :-) When LiveUpdate downloads the update, it will prompt the user for a reboot of the machine. It can take between a few days and a few weeks to update the vanity download link with the latest version.
