It was released today. I downloaded and installed it on a couple of systems and my first impression is good - same very fast install not requiring a reboot, similar GUI as 2009, key from 2009 was immediately recognized. What worked best for me was a custom uninstall of 2009 which saves the key and any data from the identity component. When I installed 2010 all that stuff was transparently imported. I have to note that I didn't install it on a Windows 7 box - only Vista - but the "system requirements" state support for all flavors of x86 and x64 Win7. It is being offered as trial-ware so check it out :geek:

Very nice upgrade and runs great on Windows 7 x64 rtm; its good to see they are still on the right path. I used their downloader/installer and it took care of everything without first having to uninstall 2009. Tbh I was expecting to pay for the new version, this is very nice of them.

FYI, it has been possible at least for the past few years to activate the latest version of norton AV or IS with the product key from a previous year (as early as 2007 in my experience). An upgrade to the latest version was not always offered through LiveUpdate though, and I appreciate that they have made it easier this time.

Thanks for the info; I guess I'll be sticking around around with Norton for a while then. I remember ZA didn't let me do that and I think its the same reason I tried something different when the newer Kaspersky was released. I hope everyone lets you do this today as long as your sub is active.
Thanks again, I'm loving this new version and will definitely be extending my sub with them

TIP:

Keep an eye out for rebate offers. NAV and NIS are often heavily discounted at frys.com. Just today I bought a bundle of NIS2009 (3 PC license), Ghost 14 and SystemWorks Basic which is FREE after rebate.

The reason why these programs are going so cheap IMO is because of the impending release of Windows Security Essentials, which will make them obsolete for a large majority of users.

I'm kinda torn on the MSE application. I almost feel better having an outside third party design the security app to protect my computer rather than letting Microsoft do it. Seems that if Microsoft really wanted to combat the issue, they would improve on the underlying security of the OS rather than offering a bolt on product to eliminate the issues once you have them.

That may be part of it, but FWIW the deep rebate offers on security software products have been a regular event at Frys. I think the developers are sometimes willing to giveaway the products to build a base, and once users have a particular product installed they will often pay for a license when it's time to renew. Regarding Norton Internet Security 2010 specifically, I believe it offers a lot more then Windows Security Essentials (based on the beta I ran for a while).

A good way to answer that question is to install the NIS 2010 60 day trial (download from softpedia.com). That way you can see how it actually behaves on your system instead of getting our opinions, which are all anecdotal and may not prove true in your case. I don't know if AVG IS is also offered as trial-ware.
