"Not enough memory" error message

It started in World of Warcraft, when I would move into a city it would pop up an error message saying "Not enough memory: " then a required amount of bytes, followed by a crash of the program. Then I downloaded the Serious Sam HD demo, and I cannot even start a game because it gives me the same message!

Thing is, I have 6GB of RAM and I could always have whatever I wanted running before. Now, even with Zune, Chrome, and Steam closed, World of Warcraft still crashes as do most games in my collection.

Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
RAM: 6GB
OS: Windows 7 64-bit

I have never had this problem before I fixed my PC and installed the new hard drive, but I'm not sure that's the problem. Any ideas would be very welcome.

Not enough memory of what kind? ram, page file, video memory?

At what resolution are you running it? tell us about the rest of your system specs

I tried installing a piece of software. Denied with message: System does not meet the requirements, 32mb RAM.
Copied it off the network share to desktop, set compatibility mode to XPsp3, and it worked.

Try compatibility mode.

Um, what does that have to do with not enough memory??

No idea how it works. But it's how I fixed my issue.
It's worth a try, and if it doesnt work this round then turn it off again.

btw, congrats on the 12k posts!

Open up resource monitor, and tell us the Total Available memory (listed at bottom center).

If that is LESS than your 6Gb, then you may have a bad stick. Also, keep the monitor open and start WoW and make it crash. See if you can see where the crash occurs on the graphs.

Ah! Come back to my problem. Sorry I was late. When I get the message, it does not tell me what type of memory it is out of--it says exactly "Not enough memory! Needs 504532 bytes" or whatever number. I thought it was Fraps, because that was closed when the Serious Sam HD demo worked later that night, but after closing it today World of Warcraft still closes. I was playing Mirror's Edge just beforehand, and that has no problems.

I run all my games in desktop resolution 1920x1080

Edit: Compatability mode for a Windows 7 64-bit game? Are you sure that wouldn't hurt my results?

Sorry, if it is designed for Win7 64bit, then you shouldn't need compatibility mode.
Cant say I've seen many games specifically designed for this, most of them just say 'compatible with Win7'.
I guess I'm out of suggestions for now then.

This sounds like it may possibly be a virtual memory error. Common in certain games that want a PF and its disabled, or set to low.

If you disabled your PageFile, re-enable it and try again letting Windows manage.

If the PF is disabled or set to low, and the game specifically wants one or a certain amount,
it will cause a error and crash the game, regardless of how much physical RAM you have.

This isn't the case with all games, but a few.
